They're really doing this right:

As explained above, the team started out with a shared view that Quote Posts can be misused. Many people simply do not want their content to be reframed by others; or they may find that if it is reposted, they receive unwelcome attention.

In order to mitigate these issues, we plan to include several features in our implementation:

You will be able to choose whether your posts can be quoted at all.
You will be notified when someone quotes you.
You will be able to withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.

We also want to build a tight integration for Quote Posts with the reporting functionality, to help people to feel more safe.

I mean, people can always takes screenshot, which have greater chance of things getting framed out of context.

True but also slightly more friction to get back to the original account -- have to search them instead of just click

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Exactly why it's so easy to get taken out of context

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Tha fuck is that supposed to even mean? Have none of the Mastodon devs ever heard about screenshots?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Calm down.

These are called mitigations. They will make a big impact.

A single tap to start spewing shit at someone is very different from having to enter someone’s username. Or even having to find someone’s username, depending on how the screenshot is handled. Friction is the point here.

You come off a bit like someone saying “you think this’ll fucking stop me?”

The question is mitigating for whom. I fear the only beneficiaries will be fascists and pornbots

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Screenshots will be fine in the case of fascists. It’s not like replies to them are effective anyway.

And I don’t remember seeing many “look at this damn pornbot” quote tweets.

This is a more constructive reply tho. Thank you.

everyone is well aware that screenshots can be easily faked.

Just thinking out loud here.

I disagree with being able to opt out of being quoted, but I agree that one should be able to opt out of having their account visible in the the Quote Post. Or maybe I am misunderstanding what a Quote Post is supposed to be? I am thinking of it as a way to share someone else's post, but also verifying the the quote wasnt just made up.

Thats stupid

Great if it is done right. This will put a stop all those screenshoted memes from Fediverse.

Sweet!

It's been 84 years.

Will be one major barrier removed. I hope people will like these safer quote toots

They say they’re going to propose some activity pub extensions to handle this. It seems to me like they should try to make this function in a way that works with how Lemmy handles cross-posts.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Lemmy cross posts work by simply doing a query on the database for all posts with the same URL. If a quoted post is just a link then Lemmy should be able to handle it

Mastodon has a lot of work to do to catch up to Bluesky, but I hope they do it.

I'm very exited for this. Just boosting a post always seems so impersonal and out of context. I almost always want to add my own message to my followers. I regularly decide not to boost because of this. I would do it a lot more if I can add my own message/context.
