Most sources on Google are putting average step length for walking between 2.1 to 2.6 feet (depending on height and sex). So it would actually take far fewer steps most likely, since the comic is assuming 1 step = 1 foot traveled.

Of course 1 step = 1 foot traveled, you have 1 foot per leg, therefore 1 foot per step.
