Wow that was a really good speech, and everything he says is true!
Yes France was right all along, we need an EU military army and military cooperation.
I personally now have to admit that I was wrong on that point.

France is the same as the US, just a few years behind.

This stupid senator is part of a party led by an anti-ecology, homophobic islamophobic dumbass, they just all want to do like Trump, just in their own time and version.

Opposing the US is just about taking advantage of the situation to say "look, I am reasonable, unlike them" and has nothing to do with what they think.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 42 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This speech reflected nothing that is like Trump.
He defends EU (the closest alliance France is in) This is contrary to how Trump behaves towards allies.
He also strongly defends democracy, also very contrary to how Trump behaves.

Being afraid of something that is evidently harmful and dangerous is not a phobia.

So the only thing remaining is that he may be homophobic, which is irrelevant in this context. And yes he absolutely sounds a lot more reasonable than Trump.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I clearly wasn't talking about the speech, but the party and more specifically its leader.

[–] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Where are you getting the anti ecology and the far right racism from?

It sounds like you're describing the Regroupement Nationale of Lepen, but this is the Les Indépendants party, which is center right by France's standards - it's basically a party aligned with Elizabeth Warren's views.

In this super propagandized environment we're in, i find comments like this deplorable (if not dangerous)... Unless it's an honest mistake?

I guarantee a view like that is not a mistake, it's moronic at best

Are you trolling (or actively propaganding?)

These are 2 different individuals from 2 different parties. Both center right by French standards, which makes them center left by US standards, but Claude Malhuret is absolutely not the same person as Edouard Philippe.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I said that the senator is part of a party led by a piece of shit. How does that mean they are the same person?

Are you trolling (or actively refusing to read)?

[–] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But it's not even the same party?

The senator is president of the party he is part of : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Independents_%E2%80%93_Republic_and_Territories_group

EDIT: Ah yes I get it. His party is affiliated with Horizons from Edouard Philippe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizons_(political_party)

Nevertheless, all the other comments have a point: Edouard Philippe is conservative, not extreme right.

In the future, please try to verify if what you're saying is true before you post. It make you look like a troll.

[–] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You could have replied with Charles de Gaulle's Wikipedia page and it wouldn't have been less relevant.

(Btw this means you don't know what you are talking about)

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I talked about the leader of the party of this senator, then linked a page about him.

What is going on with people here?

[–] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

France is not like the US. There's no such thing as a party line and party leaders do not have as much influence on members as is the case in the US.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Give me examples of his homophobia.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do you all disagreeing with @Solumbran keep track of French politics long-term? I mean, in each new election, the far-right is closer to winning. And Macron, despite being really good now for international politics (I'm truly greatful for that, it's sorely needed) is doing pretty shitty things on the national level. France stands on the good side of history now, but so did the US not long ago. The balance in France is fragile, just like in many other European countries, sadly.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I've lived in France for over 6 years, albiet most of those years homeless. One thing I've learned of the French people is that they'll NEVER be satisfied with their politicians. Even if a politician were to just stand and breath air, a Frenchman would find something wrong with it.

So I have some grasp of the shortcomings of French politicians. I also have some grasp on the shortcomings of how the French people like to portray their politicians. So I ask a simple question; are there examples of this particular politician expressing homophobic, anti-gay sentiments?

[–] heavydust@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

IMHO islamophobia is a trend that people tend to use to shut people up. They also forget that France has been regularly attacked by muslim terrorists since the 80s/90s. All the muslims I know don't care about that crap and they live their lives like everyone else. You wouldn't even know they are muslims.

It is the new generation that is offended every five minutes because, for some reason, France don't like seeing traditional religious clothes from the middle ages all over the place, which comes from the catholic church that ruled with an iron fist until the revolution (and for an additional century from French people who were still deep into the sadistic teachings of the church).

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Edouard Philippe (yes that's who I was talking about) has been opposed to IVF for gay couples.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 30 points 2 weeks ago

This speech should run 24/7 on all American channels.

Ah finally someone translated it. It's a good speech.

[–] nunolc@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 weeks ago

Not familiar with him (admittedly I'm not very knowledgeable on French politics), but that was a fantastic speech, worth sharing.

Finally someone calls out the elephant in NATO's collapsing room - we're led by a reality TV traitor cosplaying as Caesar.

the marshall plan and the subsequent grip the us has over europe did a number on them, as always. but thats really golden coming from france of all places.

[–] gutsnsuch@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

How can you call a man a traitor who is not even on your political side. The republicans have a different view, aim and approach. Calling someone a traitor who doesn’t believe in your philosophy is one of the most mind bending-idiotic insults.

[–] witnessbolt@lemm.ee 20 points 2 weeks ago

You sound like a Russian bootlicker. In other words, a traitor. Weaponizing tolerance against us.

Tolerance is a social pact. Nazis and Russian bootlickers are breaking it.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Politics, and a political side has absolutely nothing to do with legal definitions.

The Republicans as a whole have openly embraced the fact that they are all, legally speaking, traitors. They want to rip up The Constitution, "drown the government in a bathtub," and install a monarch to rule in place of democracy.

The actions of these traitors fits the definition of being a traitor according to the laws that they so gleefully want to throw out, so that they may rule forever with an iron fist taking us back to the days of the late 1700s when they could own slaves, own women, murder brown people with no repurcussions, and America was "great"

You defending The Republican anti-American platform won't gain any traction here, you fucking fascist traitor.

Small warning, since you're a newbie. We will trace, and doxx you, if you continue to insist on being a traitor to democracy.

[–] match@pawb.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

he's a traitor because he betrayed allies
