A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Skynet did win.

Conner led a rebellion, after the machines won. Terminator was an attempt to go back and squash the rebellion before it started.

By Terminator, the rebellion hadn't (yet?) been successful, and all it did was ensure the leader of the rebellion would be born. The second was an fight over ensuring/preventing the paradox caused by the first.

I didn't follow things after that, but, and I thought the second was not as good as the first so I gave up on the franchise; but in none that I saw was Skynet ever prevented. The fact that the third movie, which I didn't see, happened means that the MacGuffin in the second movie wasn't needed for Skynet to happen.

I thought the second was not as good as the first

That is a pretty rare take! Most consider it one of the examples where a sequel is better than the original (and T2 is considered one of the best action movies of all time).

It depends, Terminator was a very unique story and more of a horror/slasher movie than an action movie. I prefer the first one, but I didn't always.

Terminator 2 is a fun action movie with heart. It's a very good movie, but it copies a lot from the original. That being said, it really pushes the boundaries of animation tech at the time, to the point where almost all the VFX still hold up.

I also really enjoy The Sarah Connor Chronicals, because it goes pretty deep into an interesting time travel war that was set up by T2. Those three IPs are all very different from each other, and are all great stories. Everything else is basically a money grab.

~~I don't agree they were a money grab. A money grab in my opinion is something, usually crappy, made based off the popularity of the first edition. T2 spent a lot of money making a great sequel. You can tell the writers/directors/actors/staff cared about the project.~~

~~A money grab would be 8 American pie "sequels" riding on the coat tails of a popular teen movie at the time.~~

~~Maybe Terminator 3 onward can be considered cash grabs, but definitely not T2 in my opinion, there is a reason it's one of the few sequels considered equal or better than the original.~~

Reread your comment. Yes, those 3 are solid, rest are money grabs.

Yeah, dude is lost. T2 still looks like it was made in the last 5 years.

It was too hammy. The entire T-800 arc was pandering. The T-1000 concept was interesting, and there were good scenes, but I felt it followed the Star Wars trend of increasingly pandering to younger crowds.

T3 portrays the actual moments of the rise of skynet, so even though I don't normally recommend it, for purposes of this discussion I wish you had seen it 😂

That's not exactly right, by Terminator, the machines are losing the war. That's the reason they sent the Terminator back to find and kill Sarah Connor before John is born.

Hmmm. That's canon, and everything I can find confirms it, but I can't find a source that ignores anything but the original movie; all of the Original Timeline incorporates information from the sequels.

I need to go watch the original again. I still remember that, within the movie, Reese - the only source of information about the future war - says they were winning until Skynet became self-aware, implying that humans stopped winning. Can you find a quote where Reese says they'd defeated Skynet, or were about to? The quotes I found imply otherwise.

To be clear: I'm not debating canon. You're right - when including all the movies, in the Original Timeline the humans destroy SkyNet. What I said, and still believe, is that in isolation in the first movie Reese does not say humans were winning the Future War, nor had they beaten SkyNet.

Unfortunately, if given the choice between having a Thunderhead AI or having a Skynet AI + Profits, the people in power would choose the latter.

I've gone down the rabbit hole hard a couple years back, and I must say, coming out the other end, surveillance integration and technological evolution aren't bad per se, l. The usage, or rather the effect to wich some people are using it is the problem.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 months ago (2 children)

But if it exists, there will ALWAYS be those people who use it like this. Therefore, those people in my mind come packaged with the technology. So you CAN say this level of surveillance IS bad, because there will never be a time when it exists that it's not also being abused.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

To add to this, you should also remember that malicious hackers will always exist, and since most surveillance systems are made by the government, cyber security isn't their strong suit.

Upvoted for good comment.

Although I do respect the problem, and I accept there will always be a loose cog somewhere that could be exploited or abused, the fear o if is really sociaty/country based.

If you live in a "decent-wish" country with a strong set of laws, and those laws put you under the microscope or you have something g to hide, I've come to the personal realization that it's not really as much of a problem as some make it out to be.

I live in the united states, where it hasn't been confirmed that our official government policy is now fascist nazi government, but also don't rule it out just yet. We absolutely might be that at this point, and we have one of the worlds biggest spy program against it's own citizens. I have no doubt in my mind that this government is watching everything online. But it's probably being monitored now with AI bullshit, that REALLY misses stuff. The tradeoff being it's almost costless for them to run it. So I have no doubt that some form of the government is reading this here right now.

Hey trump! Go fuck yourself!
