This is more of an edge case. You do collect coins and upgrade you ship. :)
You can collect coins and get upgrades in quite a lot of games that are certainly not tycoon games (see: a ton of RPGs, and some platformers). I politely disagree that this is any kind of edge case. I think it's flat-out not a tycoon game. It's cool, I like the idea of restoring the environment, but I really think this doesn't belong here at all. I do not moderate this community though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
