To repeat an interweb truism...

English isn't a language; it's three smaller languages sitting on each other's shoulders and wearing a long coat and a fedora.

To repeat another interweb truism...

English is closer to Chinese/Japanese as a pictographic system, since there are so many exceptions to the phonetic rules, syntax, and grammar that govern it, that it's often easier to just memorize whole words and phrases, than to guess how to use them from alphabet alone

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And the other one:

"English is a language that lurks in dark alleys, beats up other languages and rifles through their pockets for spare vocabulary"

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

It did come from England. So that tracks.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

Never heard that one, but it's true. When I need to spell a word I ask "does it look right?"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You forgot the dark alley and truncheon...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a comment that you can use on pretty much any post on any subject.

"This is my mother's recipe for lemon zest cake..."

You forgot the dark alley and truncheon…

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My mom forgot about the dark alley part though so it was public.

Yeah that's true but the English language is known for stealing words.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Counterpoint it's not theft if you're related and they clearly weren't using it. Also it's not theft if they stole something first, looking at you Japan stealing our swear words you fucking cock sucking bastards.

I'm sorry. I don't speak Spanish.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Dude, that's clearly Romanian.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Sorry I'm American

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 days ago (3 children)

At least it's not as f-d up as French where dudes casually ignore like half of the letters in a sentence.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

This is why I found French confusing.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Have you experienced Danish? They swallow more let's than the French by a metric mile

And do numbers over 80 even weirder

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tha mi an dòchas nach coinnich thu ris a’ Ghàidhlig

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I mean, it might be interesting. To be clear, I don't dislike French, it's quite fun, just weird at times

[–] [email protected] 39 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Wait till you notice the "ueue" in "queue"

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

80% of the letters are silent.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

“kyu-ee-oo-ee”

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

That's a good one too

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

The letters are lined up in a queue

[–] [email protected] 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Came to comment same. Though, I prefer “Oushen”

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

English is dumb. It's Pacifiko in Esperanto.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

From now on, I'm going to call it the "Pacific ocean", where the first c is pronounced as "c" and the last one as "c".

Also what a missed opportunity to call it the pacifi-c! Get it? The pacifi-sea? I'm very funny I know haha I should start a standup comedy show I will earn millions and I will become rich and famous and make my homies proud. Baking a cake requires four ingredients- flour, sugar, baking powder and grandma's heart. By heart, I mean her love. Not her heart actually. That will kill her. But she is already dead :( I am sad. I will bake a cake. But no grandma, so no cake. I am sad :(. I am sad. I will bake a cake. But no grandma, so no cake. I am sad :(. I am sad. I will bake a cake. But no grandma, so no cake. I am sad :(. I am sad. I will bake a cake. But no grandma, so no cake. I am sad :(.

is it tài píng yáng, taepyeongyang or tai hei yo?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

If you are Mainland Chinese (excluding Guandong Province), or Taiwanese, it's: tâi pʰíŋ jɒŋ

If you are Hong Konger, Guandong Province Resident, or just want to spite the CCP, it's: tʰa:i˧ pʰɪŋ˨˩ jœ:ŋ˨˩

(it's IPA btw)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Guys guys. Come on.
We don't know Spanish here.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Don’t worry. Trump will rename it soon.
