I'm a Brit. I was in Italy recently, and oh my fucking god, American girls are so fucking annoying. I'm sure they are as sincere as anyone, but the many conversations I overheard sounded so basic and vacuous.

It got to a point where I was convinced the same group of early 20-somethings were going to all the same places that we were.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

American dude here, right there with you. Just some of these conversations you overhear from girls in their 20s or even 30s is mind numbing, and they can keep going until the sun comes up. And they're loud.

My wife and I saw Dead and Co last year at the sphere in Vegas, and there were these two women behind us that wouldn't shut up the entire show, just talking like you'd envision two teenagers gossiping out their asses.

I think a lot of it just comes from a complete lack of social awareness, and if they're the slightest bit pretty, they've likely never been checked for being rude or obnoxious.

This isn't just women. It's men too. Hanging out around 20 something dudes you hear the same lame jokes, same monotone voice, and same horrible takes. I can see a group of guys and tell you what each one will say before they say it. It's just inane and pointless. Even worse in online game servers. Not a single original thought is found. And this is coming from a 40 year old guy who quoted anchorman all day while drinking through his 20s.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

True enlightenment. The truth of everyone being lame as fuck.

There's a particular pitch with the women where it feels like it hits the pressure point of my soul.

Nailed it with men. In my former friend group there was one guy they all liked more, they would literally lame joke/bad take each other for his favor. He and I would talk about it later like WTF he was just like yeaaah always been that way. Mid 20s.

I'm sure to them i was the lame fuck but when your gut tells you shit is dumb it's time to find new friends.

i think with guys it just has an easier time becoming background noise because of the lower voices and generally lower level of energy in the speech, it's more like "bro look at my car, that's a sweet ass car, i like driving my car to do man things, you guys wanna go watch some sports ball? hell yeah"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Naw. I like girls and their energy. I much rather be with that then lame as fuck monotone "hot take" Braxton and his shitty views on women and cars and politics. All of which are just rehashed twitch streamer garbage.

you seem to have read something unrelated to what i wrote in my comment

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And what group do those who post "I'm 14 and this is deep" esque comments fall into?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

No, idea. What group do you think you fall into?

Wait… oh, I get it. You meant my comment. Haha! Good one! You have such an original wit.

I had always heard that as a quote of Eleanor Roosevelt’s but there’s actually no record of her saying it if you look into it.

The history of the quote itself is interesting though. The earliest known version of this idea appears in a 1901 book by Charles Stewart, where he attributes it to historian Henry Thomas Buckle. The sentiment has since been echoed by various figures, including Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, who used it in a 1959 article, prefacing it with “As the unknown sage puts it…”

The association with Eleanor Roosevelt seems to have emerged in the late 20th century, with no concrete evidence linking her to the quote. It appears that over time, the phrase became misattributed to her, possibly due to her reputation for insightful commentary. However, without a verifiable source, it's best to consider the attribution to Roosevelt as unsubstantiated.

It sprung to mind as apropos due to the irony of criticizing “small talk” with talk about other people which the quote alludes to being a different kind of small talk.

Guys, new copypasta just dropped

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I bet you're fun at parties.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I am, thanks for acknowledging! I was going to focus on sitting at home with a couple cats and posting “edgy” comments online but then I realized you had the market cornered there.

I guess we all have to play to our strengths, eh?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Do you all just dive straight into existential dread? No foreplay?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

They usually sound much more "squeaky" than that though.

I thought it was "ITS NOT LIKE THAT IN THE STATE GAVIN". heard across several Burroughs.

To Africans, to Asians, to the rest of America (as you should know, America is a continent)

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

One could even say America is two continents.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Just like East Europe and West Europe, East Asia, South Africa and North Africa... /s

Check out why America (the continent) is called the way it is, it is quite interesting. Hint: "Americo Vespucci"

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

There is a North America, and there is a South America,

Those are two separate continents.

You can check on any map of continents and that will show you that this is true information.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If anything, it's the divide between Asia and Europe that's arbitrary.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

while the precise line you draw is arbitrary, it's pretty universal to draw general cultural borders between europe/the middle east/the india area/the rest of east asia

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

True! But then it'd make sense to draw another line between east Asia and the middle east

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, just like the Gulf of America?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You may want to double check that.

“Most English-speaking countries recognize seven regions as continents. In order from largest to smallest in area, these seven regions are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

That article includes 5 different conventions of which 3 consider america as a whole continent.
