The food gets a +10 buff if the kid has to stop doing their homework from the table on the corner to take your order and goes back to it after

[–] [email protected] 54 points 1 week ago (1 children)

+5 if their little sibling is riding a tricycle around the restaurant

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)

+10 if the little sibling answers the phone

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

If you add a couple of toddlers in a fenced off corner, you've just described my local Chinese restaurant to a T.

That places food is beyond amazing.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

+20 if the bouncer is a baby

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I dont understand this kind of photos. Why do you just photgraph random people and load it up to the internet? Especially if they are a kids/teenagers and are feelling obviously unwell about it ...Kind of a dick move. And Im not talking about the arrogant joke garnished with racism

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I agreed until you called this racist, this is just observational humor about hole in the wall/family owned restaurants. Joke good, photographing kids bad. Even if OP is hypothetically racist, nothing racial was said so you are reaching for offense here

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Its a Joke about a family living on the edge of poverty. The kids have to work in the business instead of doing their homework in a quiet place or go playing. And the joke is not working on the level "were are all in this shit hole together", this would be fine. No it the arrogant "hey look at this poor kid living in this shit hole. Hahaha. Now bring me my food" level.

The racism is just the garnishment on top. Playing the cliches of people from asia.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Brother that’s more racist than the joke. You presumed everything based on your existing bias/prejudice.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ok, so explain the joke to me. On what lvl is it supposed to work then?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ah you’re simple, sorry I didn’t realize.

I’ll repeat what someone already said, read it slow now: Hole in the wall family owned Asian cuisine is typically way better than a large corporate Asian cuisine restaurant.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So the picture of a 13(?) year old kid inside a unpolished takeaway with the text "better done his homework" is a glorification of "family owned asian cuisine"? I dunno. I think this would look different

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Admittedly I didn’t see the title. Just the caption in the image. Regardless, you seeing it different says more about you than anything else.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

You can often see the same picture in diferent ways. A well excuted joke is playing the diferent bias and point of views. I dont accuse the author to be a racist. Its think its just insensitive and unaware. Probably my coment(s) are leading to some thoughts and some kind of reflection. And if the author in the end decides its still a good joke, fair enough. There a lot more shitty "comedians" out there. I wont mind.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Only racist thing here is your mind bruh

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Playing jokes on racial cliches, even if the cliches are positive, are still racist

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You are assuming it's a race thing at all. So you think this same photo where the restaurant was a family owned burger joint and the kid at the cash register was white that suddenly wouldn't be racist? That makes you the racist. You clocked the race of the child and presumed a whole lot of information that was not given to you. How do you know this isn't a summer job? How do you know the actual age of the kid? He could be 16 with a slower development. There's so much that you are assuming based solely off of your experience around Asians and Asian restaurants.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Seriously, a really popular show out now is Bob's Burgers, about a family who owns a burger restaurant and he absolutely loves making great burgers. And they're white.

The idea is if it's a small, family run restaurant, there's a good chance those recipes are family recipes. So it's gonna be good.

Also, I understood the homework thing to be about his age , not about his race. I might be wrong, though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, its all a interpretation. But the picture is either playing with this assumptions or is at least tolerating them. If you want to do this joke without this ... stale aftertaste(?), you have to set frame different

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're the only one thinking the joke is about Asians. Which makes you the racist. That's what I'm saying. The joke is about family owned restaurants and you could have it be any family of any race. You're the one focusing so hard on their race. You're the one with the issue with the race in this picture.

Read: you have a problem with the fact that there is an again child in this photo and would rather it be a non-Asian.

Do you see the problem with that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago

First of all: My main issue was the photographing of a kid without obvious consent. The racism, as I said in the first post, is only the "garnishment."

But still, its there. On a sub line. And Im willing to believe that the author isnt aware of the possibilty to interpret it this way. Its kinda nice, that you dont see this issue too. You have kinda "freed" yourself from this point of view. But on the other hand, you should be aware, that some poeple, with diferent bias, see things different. And if a right wing author would have posted this online, you would've thought about the post diferent too, I assume.

I dont want to write a detailed analysis of the picture to frame out every issue in detail and combined and write every possible interprations down, but I try to summarize it.

In this picture, a Kid, read as an Asian originated 13 year old boy, is photograhed. Obviously without clear consent. This is humilating for the kid and you could see this as an act of showing off power to him. He is quiet young and still has to work in the family bussines to keep it running. The family is very likely to be in need for customers, so he to needs to act as an servant and is unlikely to stand up for himself. The kid looks kinda nerdy and fulffills this way the cliche of the dilligent Kid from an asian family. The author isnt picturized, but the caption is in english and uses some kind of slang of the white majority for the offered food.

Or in short terms: A white person in power is humilating a servant, looking like a cliche-asian-kid.

Do you see it now?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

People don't understand that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why do you think they're on the edge of poverty? That's the most racist part of your post, IMO.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Its an assumption the picture is sugesting. A small, unpolished family bussines, where the kids have to work in after school to keep it running. If this business fails, the family usually fails. You have to work your arse off, to avert this. On daily basis, your whole live. Ive grown up in such a family. You can romanticize this, but in the end, you are living on the edge.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Has anyone ever told you that you're too sensitive?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah sure. Could be. But on the other hand, you felt the urge to coment too. I could ask you the same question.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 week ago (3 children)

If you ever go to Ottawa, there’s a noodle bar in the ByWard Market that’s amazing. The guy stretches the noodles the moment you ask. Simple ingredients, amazing taste.

I actually don’t know. I was passing by and hungry. They’re very small, with like four or five tables only. But I’ll make sure I’ll go back there next time I’m in the city.

Edit: Looking at photos, I THINK it’s Wang’s Noodle House.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you don't want to post the name here, message me it because I'm kind of curious if I'm thinking about the same place hahaha

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I THINK It’s Wang’s Noodle House, but I can’t be sure.

The hole in the wall mexican food joint in my town that I love occasionally has a 12? year old girl at the register, and the other mexican food place that is staffed purely with adults doesn't season their food, so this tracks.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I happened upon a Mexican place in Belvedere Illinois. I knew it was a good sign when they brought 3 bottles of salsa with basic homemade labels and chips that did not appear to have come from a bag. Then I spotted that the menu differentiated between Mexican style and American style tacos. Then to take our orders a man who appeared to be at least 80 and a teenager came up with the teenager translating for him.

Naturally the food was to die for. I have a feeling I'll be eating there every time I drive through Belvedere

When the old white man asks for help to order from a stranger, you know it's gonna be good.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

You know it's real authentic when you hand your credit card to an 11-year-old 😆

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

I ordered from a place where the crab ragoons came in a ziploc bag.

I still think about that meal.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That kid could be the kid at the place up the road. Don't kid yourself that kid know more about what you want than you do.
