I wonder how far away we are from bans on hiring racial minorities, women and queer people. Some of the first acts against minorities the Nazis carried out were bans on working for the government and bans on working in education. Eventually the Trumpists will get to that point. Fascists are neither creative nor original. We know what they want and we know what they're going to do, it's all a matter of timing now.

Fascists actually are both creative and original, as Umberto Eco has noticed long ago.

About this "digital equity" ... They are removing something that was intended to replace monopolist companies' expenses with government's expenses. If another company can't lay wire to some town, then one should investigate why. Not play dumb and pretend one can't do anything other than throwing more money.

I've seen an interview with Bill Joy about solving the problem where you can't regulate such a complex industry properly, yadda-yadda, the answer is simple - you don't regulate it preventively, dictating what specifically they should and shouldn't do, you just calculate damages and fine the companies after. They'll then find a way to not cause those damages.

It seems sometimes that many people not only blame "capitalist" mechanisms for everything, but also refuse to use them as a weapon in their own favor.

I'm not going to nitpick you on your politics since that's not my strong suit. However, as someone who's worked 4 years in rural networking and infrastructure as everything from tech support and customer service to engineering and field repair:

ISPs will never install 100G+ fiber circuits to cities 100+ miles from their nearest drop on a whim. They absolutely need a market that (1 needs internet and (2 can afford it. otherwise they're gonna waste money if they can't recoup the costs. the thing Trump is rolling back is the thing that helps to guarantee* that ISPs won't kill themselves trying to make infrastructure work.

and yes, of course Spectrum and Comcast could do it and be fine, but because of our dear sweet "free market", they don't give a fuck about these small rural places because at their scale (read: monopoly) there's no reason for them to. This means it's the little guys - actual small business ISPs, that are gonna be pulling conduit and standing up switching and line cards and distribution backbones and applying for construction permits and FCC licenses for spectrum with the money that comes from programs like these

The little guys can't do rural builds otherwise because it's too cost prohibitive without a way for people to pay for the service - too risky.

The big guys won't because they don't give a fuck. And if they do complete a build, the service is fucking garbage because they literally leave the infrastructure to rot while saying they'll be sure to send a tech to look at it, while paying that tech 5 pence and an "atta boy" to fix a rotting mess of cable that should have been decommissioned 20 years ago. edit: semantics

100% this. Our local cable company, a subsidiary of Spectrum, refused to lay fiber to anywhere but our core metro centers and even then, only to businesses. It wasn't until our metros collectively agreed to subsidize another, smaller ISP to come in and lay fiber to every neighborhood across the region (I live somewhere that has like 6 cities all closely clumped together). The monopoly cable company sued for years trying to block it. They allllmost succeeded, too, until a state appeals court finally overturned their injunction. Now we finally have competition and it's glorious. I pay less than half what I did before and get twice the speed.

Well, I'm not in the US, but I've seen one village (not exactly, mostly dachas) organize enough to reach a nearby ISP and have an agreement, so there's fiber there now, from reading such posts it seems that with better speeds than many towns in the USA. They just need certainty that enough people will use it and pay for it, to lay infrastructure first.

But yeah, it's not 100+ miles.

Maybe crowdfunding infrastructure can be a thing, lol.

This headline has come up a few times. Everyone seems to miss the glaringly obvious point that calling a program racist because it targets low income families is… racist.

Poor white people don't even exist to Trump

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I think he thinks poor white people are evil and defective and that's why they're poor.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago

The funny thing is at this point it is pretty clear that rich people are rich because their empathy is defective.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

suckers and losers, its the same thing he applies to veterans. the day after the 1/6 INSURRECTION, he called all of them Low-class.

"massive broadband rollout" but they fail to mention that that rollout cost $200 billion and was thirty fucking years ago.

If it wasn't for the grants given I'd still be on Comcast paying $80/mo for 325Mbps on a 400 plan that was recently "upgraded" for an additional $10/mo without my consent (the upgrade was replacing 300+mi of lines that were destroyed in a winter storm, lines that were installed in the 90s). Now I have fiber for $50/mo, and Comcast can fuck off on their monopoly. Also, funny thing - their save attempt was to drop my speed to 300 and still have me pay $80/mo.

Also, kudos to the reporter for calling him Mr. Trump as accolades are for those who earn them.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

I wish there was more than one option for (non Satillite) >50 Mbps internet where I live.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

my tiny rural hometown in the middle of fucking nowhere southwest United States got 10Gbps fiber to every home in the town last year, and 1G fiber in 2021 as a result of Biden's infrastructure bill. that fiber cost $45/month for 1Gbit with no data caps - before that, the best we could get was 50Mbit on rickety wireless service. Genuinely changed my life - being able to homelab (more) reliably got me into networking and pays my bills now. I hate how this new admin is so fucking myopic, or worse, malicious

Though Mr Trump called it racist, the words "race" or "racial" appear just twice in the law's text: once, alongside "color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or disability", in a passage stating that no groups should be excluded from funding, and later, in a list of covered populations, along with older adults, veterans, people with disabilities, English learners, people with low literacy levels and rural Americans.

So it had nothing to do with race. But we need to cut waste. Nevermind the several trillion dollars just approved for the military, after we were already spending more than the next several countries combined.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He doesn’t actually know what the team ”racist” means, he just knows energizes his base to hear things called that. Whatever shocks his voters into action and belief is good publicity for him and his cronies.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

He knows what we say it means, but he is a eugenicist and believes that white people are biologically superior. He co-opts our language because it fuels a media cycle. The fascists love when he co-opts our language. Its all games of confusion and misdirection and redefinement.

[–] FistingEnthusiast 17 points 1 month ago

He's afraid of people being informed by anything other than cable "news"

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

He simply does not like it because it does not fill the billionaires pockets. Whether he calls it "racism", "terrorism", or "gobbledigook" does not make a difference.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

tRUMP is a fucking idiot, proves it once again by making noises with his fat fucking pie hole.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Of all things to cut, I like Npr, but ok fine. But internet access is so valuable, if there was anything you'd think he would fund it would be internet access. But apparently no. Then again remember that he appointed an fcc leader that repealed net neutrality.

I will down vote any and all news that referes to something that the Weird Cheeto in command said.

If you go to PieFed afaik you can filter posts by keywords and you even get asked if you want to see no posfs related to him or Muskolini, no need to troll downvote posts

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sorry, I was having one of those days, I guess.

I haven't found a good way to filter by subject, so thanks for the tip, I'll have a look.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

No worries, by the way I found out you can filter posts by keyword just not on the default Lemmy interface but in some apps such as: Voyager, Connect, Sync, Summit, Mlem, Boost, Eternity, Thunder, Arctic and on web interfaces Tesseract and Voyager. Lemmy.world has m.lemmy.world where you might be able to use Lemmy with keyword filters
