Narrator voice: the Spaniards did not, in fact, "love" brown women.

(It took about forty years after contact for the church to declare indigenous people as actually human with the 'Sublimis Deus' papal bull in 1537.)

[–] [email protected] 9 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I'm surprised it didn't take longer.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 17 hours ago

Well that was the church, not the conquistadors or the spanish crown and emperor. I believe the history went along the lines of some clergy felt the conquistadors were being a little too barbaric and unchristian, so they convinced the Spanish to debate it a few decades later and eventually convinced them to take a break for a few years.

I've seen this posted a few places and there's amazing number of people who aren't able to pick up on it. For the first frame no it's not really MSG people. It's a British person selling opium to Chinese kids. They're tricking them. They're British it's what they do. For the second frame I'm deeply concerned about how many people aren't able to read the facial expression and body language of the two native women. Somehow some of y'all looked at them and thought yeah they seem happy despite the frowning faces and sad looks on their face. It's implying the rape.

Drug pedaling Brits and rapacious conquistadors. That's the message of this comic. Media literacy not at a high it seems

It's because it's a fucking gross depiction. Everyone gets that.

It's also the weirdest mix of historical innaccuracy and self censorship.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago

Clearly not enough people get that.

Centurii-chan has really captured the market on gooners that celebrate these things. The artist does it all on commissions and the requests they recieve indicate their market is genuinely into that sort of thing.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Having this be a commissioned piece certainly explains the weird MSG line.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

Most things I recall are often a lottery system of subscribers submitting requests. I was an old subscriber but I started seeing a bit of an unsettling pattern and they got increasingly porny.

I don't blame the artist one bit though. Get that money.

Sure let's read into it. The colonizer is also a women. So that is not accurate.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 hours ago

Wow, you really cracked that one you super sleuth you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 18 hours ago

they should give the indigenous women knives

[–] [email protected] 15 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

If "loving women" means raping them and taking them as sex slaves then sure.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 17 hours ago

it's a typo.

it says ,"I fucking love brown women". it was supported to say, "I love fucking brown women".

[–] [email protected] 17 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (4 children)

pretty gross whitewash of the rape, torture and enslavement of many thousands of women and children by colonizers

[–] [email protected] 18 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure that the second page is depicting the scene before the rape takes part, both natives look displeased because they were forced to be there. And the left one could be a kid.

Idk what's being whitewashed in this metaphorical rape illustration tbh.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 13 hours ago

People are completely media illiterate and see the "main"character of the picture being happy and thus immediately think it's a celebration of the bad thing

[–] [email protected] 5 points 19 hours ago

And all of the straight up genocide.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

Yeah, that post wasn't even funny by 4chan standards.

edit: fair, i removed my toxic comment.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Let's not weaponize people's votes, thanks. Probably the single worst "feature" added to Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

It has its uses but most of them are bad

[–] [email protected] 4 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Honestly, I don't see any real reason anyone should be able to see anyone else's votes that isn't nefarious. The only reason people would want to see how others vote is to be able to call a hate mob to harass someone for "voting wrong."

Regardless, people should be allowed to vote however they want, even if that means its not the way you or I would have voted a comment or post. People vote on posts and comments for a trillion different reasons. Someone might agree with a comment but they feel it is off-topic or de-railing the conversation so they downvote it, and then you get terminally online serial harassers attacking them because "they don't agree" or some other awful reason.

Ultimately, this ends in posts getting no more down votes, except for maybe spam posts, and then upvotes also being low because nobody wants to get attacked for how they vote on posts. Certainly a great way to ruin engagement in an online platform, IMO.

Like, just remove votes entirely at that point.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 13 hours ago

Like, just remove votes entirely at that point.

A number of communities and instances disable downvoting which helps moderate the behavior altogether. Either people agree and upvote to promote, or they GTFO and/or feel ignored.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 14 hours ago

I think it was a response to give out needed mod tools that just ran across transparency as an ideal.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 16 hours ago

sorry what?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 19 hours ago

Given NJM's comment I can fully understand his downvoting. People can disagree with your comment for more than one reason.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don’t think I understand the first slide. The Japanese invented MSG.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Some nations like the British colonized and conquered by fucking with the people. The other end of the spectrum, Spain and others just fucked the people.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

The hell kind of sick joke is this?

The conquistadors literally drug women out into the valleys underneath where the Inca were barricaded up and raped them so their screams would echo up to the besieged, whom they later either slaughtered or enslaved, and beheaded the rulers after forcibly converting them to Catholicism and hid their remains so they couldn't be worshipped in Inca tradition. Is that what you consider "just fucking"?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Wrong. The Spaniards did a lot of murder.

Funnily enough a pretty large portion of Robinson Crusoe is about how superior the British colonial method is because healthy slaves make more money.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, but that doesn’t explain the MSG in the baggie

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Opium

Tho why they don't spell it out, idk

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought it was referring to the Opium Wars

[–] [email protected] 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Dunno how you get that. MSG has nothing to do with opium.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Do you not understand the concept of "lying?" The comic is showing the British person selling drugs and calling it MSG. It isn't actually MSG. 🤦‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

Yeah but they didn't lie about what Opium was. It's a weird obfuscation/selfcensoring.

The Brits would absolutely just ask kids on the street if they wanted some opium. Hell, forget the asking part, kidnap/buy them, get them hooked, and prostitute them was a go-to move.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

The french name for this is "café au lait" (for the french).
