Holy shit! It's spreading all the way into Europe.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

More than just Europe actually, but you really stopped being able to tell just how many were in the US if I zoomed out further

Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Malawi, Australia, also all have at least one No Kings protests planned too

EDIT: and Canada

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Malawi is surprising to me, what's the context for one happening there of all places?

Also the ones in Australia/Canada/UK are kinda funny to me, seeing as they literally do have a king.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

I like how they've tactfully called the ones in the UK "No Tyrants"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Don't know the organizers or anything, but I'd imagine the heavy foreign aid gutting is probably part of it

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Have y’all stop putting the Queen of Canada on your currency?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

The coins now have King Charles. And she'll be off the $20 bill at some point.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ah oops, yes there is one in Vancouver didn't catch that

The other ones you probably noticed were not that and were part of Alaska, just with some really big bubbles that make it look further inland

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was mostly joking because Canada has a king.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

So does the UK, and yet...

Ol' Chuck be like "what'd I do?!"

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

lol. He knows what he did.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

And to whom

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

As a British citizen I feel as though the marches here are unrelated and we're just fed up of ol' sausage fingers and the rest of the peado brigade at Buckingham.

::: spoiler /s ofc. We stand with the Americans looking to fight fascism; WW3 affects all of us. :::

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Is it meaningful to attend in Europe? If so how does it work?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Several of those countries still support monarchies, so it could be that, though it is likely more in solidarity. Just like the floyd protests, there were demonstrations in over 60 countries. Protesting at the embassies does send a message to the administration and its lackeys.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Much (most?) of those protests in other countries are outside of US embassies, so sends a message to the US still

It also puts notice to the country you're within to not treat the US as business as usual

[–] [email protected] 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The dots in Mexico and Europe are surprising.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

can Americans outside the US not celebrate?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Some good advice about surveillance self-defense while attending a protest:

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 days ago (2 children)

A handful of my friends are going. A couple friends I can't convince to leave their house, so they'll be staying home enjoying the safety of being straight white cis abled bodied men, I guess.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

What have you tried to do to convince them?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Nothing effective. Invited them to come out with me to the protest. Suggested we hang out after. Tried to appeal to their civic duty. Tried to appeal to their obligations to the more vulnerable.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I fear for all our safty. If he will have a sitting Senator arrested what will they do to us? Woke up to a nightmare of being wisked away and thrown into a prison cell. It felt so real, I was just about having a panic attack when my wife woke me up. And I am a cis white male and I am frightened.

Also I am a far left almost socialist, so definitely enemy of the state.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I’ll give them ten bucks.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Should shake your dick at them until they run

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why would they run from dick?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Straight white cis make not willing to get up for anything. I'm just drawing conclusions here, perhaps unfairly.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Plenty of lazy “straight” cis white males have chomped on my dick. 🤷‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

That's fair

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm curious, what exactly is offered to these friends for them to leave the comfort of their homes?

personally, I plan to stay home and enjoy the no kings weekend and not participate in the fascist circle jerk. probably work on my garden. and if I go anywhere probably go see my sick in-laws.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Do I have to try to convince you that you should care about other people? Specifically, people you don't already know personally.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

you don't know me. you don't know what lengths I go to to protest this sham of an administration. you have no idea how much impact what I do has on the efforts of protesting this administration.

so please, explain to me, from your tower, how I'm not doing enough.

while you're measuring your protest-pp against mine, how about you whip yours out and explain how big your protest-pp is.

nevermind, I'm not interested in seeing your pp because I don't judge others based on the perception of helping others. I just help others because it needs to be done without my ego getting in the way.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You're right that I don't know you. All I got was your post.

When you wrote, "what exactly is offered to these friends for them to leave the comfort of their homes?", it came off as very transactional. Like, "I don't care about other people and their struggles, unless I'm being offered something.". That's why I ask if I'd need to sell you on the idea of caring about people.

I don't know how much you're doing. Your whole tangent about comparing weiners is kind of a non sequitur.

Your line "I just help others because it needs to be done without my ego getting in the way." specifically seems to contradict "what are you offering them?"

So I don't know what your deal is.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

A couple friends I can't convince to leave their house, so they'll be staying home enjoying the safety of being straight white cis abled bodied men, I guess.

my "deal" is you're attacking them based on a characterization of these people that have zero basis on the original concept you wish to convey. it's purely ad hominem or conjecture on your part that implies they aren't going because they will be "enjoying the safety of being straight white cis abled bodied men"

maybe you should explain to them why it's important to you that they be there? maybe they aren't going because you're insufferable? maybe they don't like how judgmental you are? IDK, maybe they just aren't good friends.

I know one thing though. you're a shit friend for attacking them for things they can't change and implying they are wrong for being it. And you know who does that? MAGA does.

so next time you want to abandon loyalty to your "friends" and sell them out for fake internet points to online strangers, take a step back

You're really going to bat hard for people you don't even know, huh.

Atacking them based on a characterization? What? My point is they're not going to protests or doing much to resist the trump admin, and they're privileged enough that they're not in any personal danger. They know why they're being asked to go. It's on the news and internet, too. They decided they'd rather just stay home and play video games.

I know one thing though. you’re a shit friend for attacking them for things they can’t change and implying they are wrong for being it.

lol what. Are you serious? They're not being attacked for their immutable properties. They're being derided for staying home instead of doing a bare minimum.

Why are you so worked up about this? Did you also freak out about the "in the woods: man or bear?" thing?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I'm not going to bat for anyone. I'm just pointing out how shitty it is to betray your friends like that. Instead of owning it you're just making up excuses on why you're right.

you don't bitch out on your friends because if you do you've got no right to call them friends.

lol what. Are you serious? They're not being attacked for their immutable properties. They're being derided for staying home instead of doing a bare minimum.

ok, you're not attacking them, you're mocking and ridiculing them for being what they are. sure, different intent but it's still no different than what MAGA does. You say potato I say potato.

I'm worked up because I've had my trust in people that called me friend broken. People I considered brothers and sisters. People who turned around and betrayed me and sold me out for "better" friends. And to this day I will not trust another person as a friend. I am alone because of people like you.

I didn't give a shit about the man/bear thing because it was manufactured outrage sold by the gallon over social media to drive interactions on platform. it was the metaphorical "tapping the fish tank to see what the fish do". yeah I get it, women trust a bear far more than any man. good for them. sounds like we have a lot in common when it comes to trust issues, doesn't it?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's not a betrayal. That's an absurd characterization.

They're not being mocked for their immutable traits. They're being mildly disparaged for not doing anything to resist the trump administration, and the fact that they are personally extremely safe is being pointed out. They are not being insulted for being cis het white guys. They are being mildly insulted for staying home playing video games while fascism is outside shooting journalists.

The fact that they're cishet white etc is brought up because it's, let's say, interesting that they're not doing anything when they're not in any personal danger. There's a whole poem about that, the one that ends with "and there was no one left to speak for me.".

Let me say it again. They're not being attacked because of their immutable traits. They're being insulted for their inaction. Their immutable traits make their inaction worse. Like if you need a place to stay, it's harder to accept when the guy living alone in a four bedroom says no than when the couple living in a studio does.

I'm sorry you've been hurt and felt betrayed but I think you're really reading more into this than there is. I texted one of the guys I was referring to in the initial post and he laughed pretty hard about it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

It's not a betrayal. That's an absurd characterization.

just more excuses and refusal to acknowledge what you did was a betrayal of trust. even if they never find out what you did, you will know what you did.

They're not being mocked for their immutable traits. They're being mildly disparaged for not doing anything to resist the trump administration, and the fact that they are personally extremely safe is being pointed out. They are not being insulted for being cis het white guys. They are being mildly insulted for staying home playing video games while fascism is outside shooting journalists.

now you're moving the goal posts again while making excuses for why you're right and vilifying them based on their immutable characterizations. "they aren't protesting because they are cis white males and because of that they are supporting the shooting of journalists." 👈 this is what you're implying with your words.

The fact that they're cishet white etc is brought up because it's, let's say, interesting that they're not doing anything when they're not in any personal danger.

yes, and it's not because you're an insufferable and toxic "friend". Jesus, do you even hear yourself? just fucking own it. you hate them because they are cis white males who don't want to do the thing you're trying to guilt them into doing. that may not be why they aren't doing it, but you're also not helping yourself. you're so impetuously self-righteous you can't even see you're doing to them what MAGA is doing to you.

I'm going to get real with you. You do not want protestors who don't care at your protests because a protest needs soul and impact. if you fill a protest with people who don't want to be there, for whatever fucking reason, your protest will die and the movement will have lost power instead of maintain or increase power.

Let me say it again. They're not being attacked because of their immutable traits.

now you're attacking them again? Jesus I'm getting whiplash from those posts moving.

They're being insulted for their inaction.

then why bring up their sexual orientation, their gender, and their race? if it's simply a problem with their response why not say, " they won't protest because they are too comfortable and won't protest." it doesn't fit you narrative that you're desperate to live in. The clear narrative that anyone who doesn't protest with you, protests against you. That kind of mentality will do nothing but make you enemies.

Their immutable traits make their inaction worse. Like if you need a place to stay, it's harder to accept when the guy living alone in a four bedroom says no than when the couple living in a studio does.

you're right, but that doesn't make the guy in a four bedroom home wrong but it may make him an asshole. last I checked assholes are everywhere, but that alone doesn't make them wrong. just like you're not wrong for calling them out for not protesting, but it does make you an asshole for using their characterizations in a way that vilifies them.

I'm sorry you've been hurt and felt betrayed but I think you're really reading more into this than there is. I texted one of the guys I was referring to in the initial post and he laughed pretty hard about it.

that's cool, I'm glad that someone found it funny. doesn't make you any less of a shitty friend though, and it doesn't give you permission to continue to abuse and betray your friends like that.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 days ago

Do you think maybe this whole one person rule thing is on its way out? fingers crossed

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

Uhggggg 10am?!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thank you for the heads up. I'm going to make sure that my loved ones and I are as far away from the protests (and the police response) as possible.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I understand the reason, but that is the exact opposite of what we need right now. These protests on Saturday are peaceful and we need everyone to stand up. Trump wants our silence and complicity. Don't give it to him

The only way out of this is through. Backing down or out will let things get worse

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

After all, that’s how we got to this situation in the first place.
