Do firefighters and police own the means of production??

Someone doesn't know the definition of socialism. At best these are social services.

Also police literally have a long history of violently putting down unionization efforts despite having a union themselves.

Speaking of the police: they sometimes beat one of their own too, and nobody else would speak up as a witness.

And just like that, we find all the pro capitalists. Go beyond healthcare to another basic need, and it gets defended. No wonder we can't push it the other way. We'd love to seize the means, but there has to be a path.

Not a question, change my mind.

Hey I think you posted this in the wrong community, surely it was meant for Unpopular Opinions?

You rn:

Socialism is when the government does stuff. The more stuff the government does, the more socialister it is! And when the government does a whole bunch of stuff, that's GOMmUNISM!!1!

I mean... They aren't? Maybe do some cursory research yourself instead of making bad faith Lemmy posts?

Counterpoint: Feudalism also had these.

Counterpoint: At times people had to directly pay firefighters or they'd let the building burn.

Yes, nowadays we pay indirectly for police and firefighters but no one is going to ask for your credit card or let alone how much tax you paid last year.

In Japan, firefighting services are paid for directly by the people living in that area.

I typically have to pay ¥10,000 a year ($69 USD) and all of that money goes to the closest fire department.

They don’t check your payment status or anything, but it’s expected of you.

Whereas policing is paid for via taxes like most other countries.

Public institutions of education

Its almost as if socialism makes total sense.

When some natural disaster destroys your house and all your neighbor's too, and some of your people are dead and you are heavily injured, what are we going to hear from you?

About which definition of the word to use, or that one possible definition applies?
