Just imagining the context where it would be phrased like this - "Hi, good to meet you, my first name is John, and my last name is Smith."
Could have been a case of two people having the same first name and the one person wanted to clarify.
What if I'm saying names out of order, and say my last now but will say the beginning or other entries on the list later?
You would still be interrupted as soon as you said "my last name is"
