I was in high school when that happened. I had been following the space program leading up to it and there had been multiple problems.

Everyone was excited because, hey, teacher in space, but on the day of everyone was freaking out.

Kid next to me leaned over:

"Do you know what's going on?"

"Space shuttle probably blew up."

"How do you know that?"

"They've been having problems all week and it's incredibly dangerous, what else could it be?"

Then they actually rolled televisions into the classrooms to show us...

Was in first grade when it happened. I was walking across the courtyard to go to the bathrooms, and I looked up in the sky. I watched the Challenger launch and explode. It was horrifying. I was six.

Never watched another launch

Is it wrong to say that the most respected jobs back then were astronaut and president, and I guess that's long gone?

Sorry, I'm re-watching For All Mankind and it's making me angry at our timeline.

That show is a moderately psychotic love letter to a time that should have existed and it always makes me so sad to watch

Wasn't big bird considered to be there first?

Yeah, he was. Imagine the timeline in which the US government launched and killed Big Bird with a fucking rocket live on television for the world to see.

Ya reckon sesame street would do an episode explaining death to kids, or would they pretend it never happened?

They’ve covered death several times, actually. Here’s a clip where they cover Mr. Hooper passing away.

Neat :3

Never had the show where I like afaik, so I don't actually know what they covered or not lol

The best part of that show is how it grew with the times, while approaching difficult topics.

If you buy the old seasons on dvd, they come with content warnings saying they aren’t really suitable for children anymore. But back then they were so hugely progressive!

Dude, I would love for these puppets to stumble and try to explain why Big Bird got yeeted into the afterlife. Followed by a photomontage of him with “Time after Time” playing in the background.

I just watched live reactions from the audience and the parents of the teacher, and that's just heartbreaking :(
