Hello everyone,

I raised the point recently already, but to make it short

I tried to reach out to the active poster, who posted to the lemmy.dbzer0 community in the past before switching back to programming.dev, and I guess they disagree with some of the stances of dbzer0 (probably the pro AI one)

Programming.dev has a few hiccups from time to time, but for a few months it has been stable

What do people think?

I really wish lemmy added proper multi-comms, than these issues would be resolved. You would just follow a multi-comm of all these comms, and any post in any of them would appear in your feed. Then there would also be a space for a pro-GenAI /c/privacy and pro-Crypto /c/privacy, without someone having to compromise their values

Coming in 1.0: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/5601

Not helpful now obviously, but nice that's it's already implemented.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

Piefed has those, but the majority of people are obviously still using Lemmy

I don't think moving instances will suddenly fix this, yet I'm still curious on why you want to move? There's no AI content on c/privacy. (Honest question)

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

As I said in the OP, I would rather collaborate with the active poster on [email protected] rather than compete on [email protected]

There are only two active posters on dbzer0, @[email protected] and I, so the move would at least consolidate the three active poster on the topic in the same place

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I understand. Though I'd rather reach out so her and get a response from her (from what I got from the post, she didn't respond?)

Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of consolidation, and I'd like to try this solution before the other.

It does seem to be an ideological opposition to db0's AI stance, though it doesn't really make sense to me because, like you said, c/privacy doesn't have anything to do with AI: https://lemmy.nz/comment/15894250

I can't really see the benefit in bending over backwards to accommodate someone who won't even communicate.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

Exactly, I struggle to see why we should destroy the community that already seems healthy enough for a poster who didn't even respond to the DM.

I'm not even pro AI myself, but I find it silly to consolidate/quit a community over it when there's literally no AI content there anyway (also, pro-AI rules aren't even enforced on the dbzer0 version, I couldn't care less about anti/pro AI sentiment.)

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

The community is only as active as regular posters are.

If I or @[email protected] switch to the programming.dev community, over time it will become more active than the dbzer0 version

As I said elsewhere, I'm just tired of not being able to have a single community as an alternative to .ml

Also, it's not about destroying a community, merely locking it. You can reopen it later if issues happen with the programming.dev one

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

At this point, I would rather follow the single organic active poster on that topic as long as they post on an ok instance (which programming.dev is)

I'm a bit burnt out of trying to have alternatives to lemmy.ml communities. We've been trying for more than a year by now (https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/21760805), and we didn't manage to get any of the alternatives communities to get even on par with the .ml one

When external projects or contributors post to Lemmy about their project, like Framasoft or Comaps, they do it on .ml communities

Either we all agree that the .ml communities stay the default ones on those topics, and that our attempt was a failure, or we agree to follow organic posters where they are.

I’m a bit burnt out of trying to have alternatives to lemmy.ml communities.

I can understand that, it is an uphill battle. [email protected] at least is doing well.

It's just annoying from a user perspective to have to keep up with all this intricate instance politics for a single comm. Maybe p.dev is the right choice just because it's so uncontroversial so won't cause issues.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Yes, [email protected] is in a better shape.

Definitely. That's why I'm always advocating for a single community, all posters post there, after a bit mods of the inactive communities suggest to their communities to get locked down and point to the active one.

And yes, that's my feeling too about p.dev

From the previous comment (https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/48474450/19929594)

Her mentioning "Also quokk.au" under the "Uhhhh lemmy.dbzer0.com is the pro-AI instance." makes it quite clear that it's an issue for her.

I reached out to her 27 days ago, she never replied to me, I guess that's not going to happen. Meanwhile, [email protected] is still the default community by far because we can't decide on one alternative community that can work for all active posters

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Honestly that's not what I got from her, tbh. I'd rather a straight response rather than an ambiguous 2 word comment

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Flamingos linked another comment that is much more clear

Honestly I’m not the biggest fan of consolidation, and I’d like to try this solution before the other.

So we just let the .ml communities stay the main ones on those topics? https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/49181106/20133299

Also, didn't we consolidate [email protected] with [email protected] ?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

The difference is that communities themselves on ml have problematic moderation, with the admins (who don't even moderate the community) removing/banning users for silly reasons.

Also, didn't we consolidate [email protected] with [email protected] ?

Growthefediverse was dead, even the moderator himself admitted it. I don't see the contradiction here tbh

If active posters stop posting to a community, it dies

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Do you have any issues with programming.dev?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

Nope, just db0 felt like a good fit. It's a good instance with great admin and moderation teams. Plus it's piracy adjacent.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

I always prefer one strong community with several active people over spreading everything out. Makes it feel more coherent, maybe mods can work together, we get less cross-posts and newcomers don't need to subscribe to dozens of places, they get fewer, but more active ones instead.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

You know what, sure. Just take the reins, I'm not able to do so. :)

I think I was a bit reactionary since I'm a dbzer0 admin and her reasoning is flawed, but I guess if it works, it's fine. Have a good day!

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Thanks!

Well, now I have to convince @[email protected] to switch too, that might be another task altogether x)

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Np. Honestly I'm a bit relieved since I haven't been feeling with my communities at all :( pretty burnt out for months straight lol

Hopefully y'all find success in the new comm

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

No worries, it's understandable! I plan to recruit a few more mods for a few communities I had to migrate following the lemm.ee shutdown to avoid that too.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Lol I'll go wherever the flow is going, though iirc the MAU deficit was more than half between the 2, so that might be an uphill battle

But yea, if you feel this is the best move, I'll redirect

Though, I will say, I find this beef with AI-gen'd stuff rather silly, people should shit on proprietary profit-driven AI companies and support open source AI

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I don't really care about AI, if there's an active poster on a non controversial instance I think following their lead probably makes the more sense

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago
[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

That one has the more limited scope of "tips and tricks to protect your privacy", which I understand to mean that news articles about surveillance etc. aren't on-topic there (so I have been posting those only to other communities with that name).

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago
[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

I have no strong preference, I'm happy to post to both in the meantime

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

We can probably find a way to consolidate to one community to avoid comments separation

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I didn't even know that there was an effort to replace [email protected] as a regular person I just prefer to post on whatever community is the biggest so if you want to rival .ml, you probably should consolidate

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

programming.dev is still slow to load for me, has been for a long time

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

I just checked, it's as fast as other instances for me
