If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

MODERATORS

Following the GHO vs Flammy yesterday was intense! It went to bed late when it was tied again, and when I woke up it was still tied. I've been trying out new apps yesterday, so I saw someone gave GHO a downvote. I decided since Flammy had survived against such a popular owl for so long, it deserves to move on. It was a really tough decision, I wanted and expected GHO to win, but with the passionate following Flammy generated and a big part of this tourney being to showcase lesser known owls, I felt it the right decision. GHO will no doubt have another good showing next year.

Burrowing Owl has a very one sided match against Chaco, but a few of you supported him. The Chaco is a cool owl I've been lucky enough to see in person, and I feel the real thing exceeds what photos can capture, so he's still a winner to me.

With the lineup set for round 2, what matches are you looking forward to or dreading to have to pick one over the other?

Has your favorite for overall winner changed due to how things have ended in round 1?

I'm shocked about GHO, but even checking it now, flammy is up by one vote, even without the downvote. So flammy is the undisputed winner imo.

I really hope we can get more support for the Snowy Owl this round. It didn't win by that much in the first round, but it's not only my favorite owl, but my favorite bird, and probably in my top 5 favorite animals.

I mean, who else can simultaneously exude such magesty and derpiness.

I feel Snowy should do well this round. They're a rare combo of big and silly. I really want to see one in the wild.

this is extremely high quality content OP, thanks for doing this, it’s really fun!

I'm just happy to see it's been a really positive experience for everyone. It's a fun way to cap off what is the first year(ish) on Lemmy for most of us. I hope we're all still here this time next year to do it again with even more people...and owls!

It was driving me crazy! I was up until 1 in the morning (had to give someone a ride 😔) and I felt I was checking in every 15 minutes to see hoo was in the lead!

For once I feel like my vote counted 😔

Aww, the underdogs (underowls?) appreciate the support!

Please try to avoid downvoting. I know there's a stray one or two that pop up on a lot of posts even before the tournament, accidentally I imagine, but with yesterday's close match it could have made a difference.

I can see it, but I hate having the downvote counter on, it makes me worry I've upset somebody, but I have been checking it for this to ensure fairness.

Barred and Great Horned were bracket busters for me. I really thought they would get past the first round. Oh well, every tournament has upsets.

Same here! Part of me is happy to see the newcomers doing well, and the other part is stunned seeing such big names go down. It makes it exciting though!

It's motivation to train for next year. Barred owl is going to be the big comeback story next time, just you wait!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yes, Barred and Eagle are going to be out for revenge!

I lost a Burrow(ing) owl. I've looked in all the trees around, and can't seem to find it......

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, everybody knows that a burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground.

But you can also come back tomorrow to vote for or against the Burrow Owl!

Haha, good. Someone got it. Sadly I think I missed the vote. Thanks for the invite though.
