What are those buildings, any idea? Businesses? Houses? I see what look like signs out front, but can’t tell what for. Idle curiosity.

This is a touristy street that leads up to a temple. Those shops are mostly peddling knick knacks, ice cream, etc.

Funny thing you should say that because IIRC there actually is a Starbucks on the left right around the corner (though with a traditional facade at least). Source: wife and I were there last year.

Kyoto has SUPER strict laws around building appearances. They absolutely do not want corporations coming in and fucking up the vibe.

As far as I know, a lot of these are small businesses. Mom and pop shops.
