See my reply to the other comment under mine. Though I’ll add I feel like I “got started” when I met a bunch of local amateur radio operators and we all got chatting about long distance, wireless data transfers, which would add a lot of resilience to a mesh system.

I’ve “started” but only so far as working on my home lab/server and home network. In theory if I get everything setup in advance, it’s as simple as getting some high gain WiFi antennas and getting other people to put their routers in bridge mode and configuring them to extend my network.

That being said, I am building out my home server with this goal in mind. An effective mesh network will have multiple devices hosting redundant instances of all the services, and the more devices doing that the more resilient the network is. To that end I’ve taken to learning NixOS for the reproducibility. Because your system is declared in a single file, and hardware specific config is separated from that, I can turn any device into a node in the mesh simply by installing NixOS and pulling the config of an existing node.

Eventually I’d love to basically build my own routers from single board computers and high gain antennas that I can just give to people. Basically a plug and play, preconfigured device that will pickup the existing mesh, or create a new origin node if not in range.

The super long term dream or goal of this would be to include a very long range, slower connection between origins to trickle feed content changes. Depending on the dystopia we end up in, this could be done with crazy strong WiFi signals, radio, LoRa, or even (inspired by factorial logistics robots) gliders or drones that are themselves carrying mesh network nodes and fly over bubbles of mesh networks.

It’s all kind of a pipe dream, but I’m at least educating myself for a time where more people begin to realize the World Wide Web as we know it is crumbling.

Exactly the opposite in fact. I aspire to host the exit node! I’d love for my whole neighborhood to mesh our networks together and form an Intranet of self hosted services. It’s a massive uphill battle in suburbia, but I have high hopes for similar projects in my local city proper.

Shows up in my Craigslist listings. Was very easy to search for. Could absolutely still be fake, but it’s not stuck in Craigslist limbo, it’s listed right there along side all the other “talent gig” listings.

I’m almost 2m tall, but 100% step-on-able. So please, ladies, intimidate me.

Child of two public educators. I’m going to disagree to an extent. There are radical teachers. They push back against standards based education because they see how it pushes an agenda from the top, rather than cater needs to the local community and individual students. There’s a lot more of these teacher than you think, and they are honestly heroes. It is thankless, low paying, emotionally and physically draining work. Like I can understand the ways they kind of messed up raising me when I think about the hundreds, maybe thousands, of other kids lives they improved, and in some cases saved.

Yeah fair, though I do know of a lot of affinity groups already planning to come up from DC. There’s even fairly easy transit options. But I do agree with spoiling his footage. If he wants to issue the order to suppress protestors at his parade with violence I just hope everyone on the ground in DC is ready for that.

Stay safe but stay angry.

This might be a bit of a stretch because it’s not a “brand” but…

Linux! I uninstalled windows almost 2 years ago to help me kick a bad gaming habit, and while I can appreciate the design of macOS and was a macOS user for YEARS before windows, I just can’t leave Linux now. Once I felt freedom it was impossible to convince myself to climb back into the ad filled box.

DO NOT GO PROTEST AT HIS PARADE! He wants the opportunity to paint the opposition as un-American by contrasting them against a parade full of US flags and lots of pomp and circumstance.

What to do instead? COME TO PHILLY! No Kings, 50501, and Indivisible are organizing a march/rally/protest THIS SATURDAY as a counter to his parade. Bring lots of US flags, bring your signs, bring yourselves. If you’re a vet, make that clear with your clothes, signs, flags etc. If you’re a healthcare worker please, PLEASE, show up if able and bring a first aid kit. We are expecting 80-120k people. The street medics will have their work cut out for them even if it stays totally peaceful. Should things be escalated in any way we will need the extra medical knowledge. Bring water, for yourself and to share if you’re able to carry the extra.

Mask, bring eye protection (safety glasses for blunt impact, lab goggles or similar should teargas get deployed), bring a respirator, cover tattoos. Have an exit and arrest plan in place. If you can, buy a cheap phone, DO NOT turn it on near your house, and DO NOT put a SIM card in it. Phones without SIMs can still call 911 and take photos/videos.

There’s so much more info if you really want to dig into it, but please just show up. Be part of the 3.5%

Oh I didn’t even open your profile! Love seeing someone who jumped on the PieFed instance!! I anticipate Blahaj and a few other instances eventually putting their federation with the melting pots to a community vote, or something like that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

@lemmy.blahaj.zone is sort of a general queer instance, but has a big population of trans femme folks already. Plus pretty much everyone on the instance “gets it”. Come check it out! We’ve got safe spaces and good memes. I would say blahaj.zone is a very women friendly instance. Not to say it will magically fix the Lemmy experience, but at the very least we have an admin that pulls zero punches when it comes to banning the jerks.

This is better than R*ddit for sure, but I feel your pain. Maybe we fire up our own instance and defederate? The same thought has come up in some blahaj chats. It’s absolutely rough, but part of the beauty of the fediverse is controlling whose content you see, but also who can see your content. That, to me, makes the fediverse perfect for communities looking to make safe, exclusive, spaces. I’d even personally consider going so far as to return to old models like ECHO (East Coast Hang Out) where you request and receive your account by snail mail. Idk, adding a vetting process to joining is important for the safety of any oppressed group. In this case adding barriers to entry is not gatekeeping, it’s acting as the bouncer to a space that is in fact reserved for specific people.

I don't play the game anymore, but I'm feeling a touch nostalgic. Let me hear your wildest callouts and I'll see if I can figure out the activity and mechanic. I haven't played since Salvation's Edge week one, so maybe limit it to all D2 raids and dungeons pre that, but I'm down to hear about what's currently going on in the game too! I've included a high contrast set of icons I made for easy pattern recognition in Vow, we also used it a bit like a bingo card trying to fill it in with silly callouts and use them for a run.

I’m moving/moved and got a chance to rearrange my bookshelf. Very happy with how it looks. Happy to discuss any titles that catch your eye!

I’ve got a bit of a back log to post, but I figured I would start strong with one of my better sourdough bakes.

Hello!

I'm Arkhive (they/she), one of your new mods and I've just got a sort of update from the mod team.

We, the mods of Onehundredninetysix (hereby referred to as OneNineSix for my own sanity), would like to introduce ourselves. The members of the mod team that are interested will post a comment below this post and hopefully mingle a bit. Something that has come up in our discussions is a general interest in owning our actions, even in online spaces. That means putting people behind the names you see in the sidebar.

As the OneNineSix community coalesces, things have been quite good from our end. While we could be quicker at processing reports, a lot of that stems from us discussing choices as a group before making final decisions...and probably a bit more fear to use our power than is good for us, but time I'm sure will fix that proceeds to power trip. We are absolutely not infallible, and we also strive to admit wrong when necessary and work to rectify it. There is a degree of patience that necessarily extends both directions between mods and users, and in the end we are all users of the same space. We will work to be good stewards of this space for all those being good stewards with us.

And so! This thread. If this idea goes over poorly, please take it out in the replies to my comment, and we will assess and hopefully the other mods will dive in on the discussion too. We have also floated the idea of an irregularly occurring, semi-regular, mod chat thread. My pitch is for "Modly Mondays" but its still an idea in its infancy and feedback is welcome;)

Thank you for your time, thank you for the memes (the cat included), and I'll ~~remove~~ see you ~~from~~ in the comments.

TL;DR I'm Arkhive (they/she), I'm a mod, there's more of us (surprise!), and we'd like to introduce ourselves in the comments.

Side note: I realize this is being posted on a day there are protests happening across the US and presumably throughout the world. While this is not an explicitly US comm, I want to remind people to stay safe. Know your rights, know the ACLU phone number, have an exit plan, go as a group, and don't talk to cops. We keep us safe.

Degoogling Android TV? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Basically the title but I have a few requirements I’d love to meet.

I have a “Smart Soundbar” that I actually quite like the audio of, as well as serving as an HDMI hub and switch, with a decent remote ect. Basically I like the hardware quite a bit and it is generally high quality, particularly the audio quality, it’s from a reputable home audio company, blah blah blah.

I got it as part of some promo with my ISP so it has their slightly customized version of Android TV on it. I’ve already gotten side loading apps working, I have my YouTube client and VPN running, Jellyfin, all that. Now I just want to get rid of all the google apps and ISP tweaks. I would also love to maintain some sort of casting option akin to chromecast or AirPlay. Is there an Android app that turns a device into an AirPlay receiver? I have one for Linux.

I realize the “best” option is to not connect the thing to the Internet, but that defeats the purpose of having access to say the Netflix app with my VPN running. Or giving relatives a “Netflix” like experience with my Jellyfin server running offsite.

Just looking for any advice on maintaining functionality of the high quality speaker and generally good Android TV interface while clawing back some privacy. I’d be willing to flash it with something totally different though if anyone know how to do that.

For some reason I can only find stock images of this pill case. I have it on good authority it makes a satisfying clicking noise and my gay, neurodivergent ass wants one.

Ideally not an Amazon link, I deleted my account a bit ago and I do not plan to make a new one.

UPDATE: It would seems this is a prepackaged way E is sometimes distributed. Thanks to folks that pointed this out.

I could have sworn I wasn’t wearing thigh highs a moment ago…huh continues typing

I realize that the lines of text in a normal file have gaps between then, which almost instantly renders this impossible, but I’ll ask anyway. I’m looking for a way to get diagrams like ASCIIFlow in my notes. I’d even settle for a dedicated tab/filetype similar to canvas. My use case here is input with a stylus on a tablet and the original site struggles. Just doing weird things with highlighting random text, because the whole page is text. Canvas kind of does what I want, but there is a speed and elegance to ACSII flow, with the added ability to copy the result as text. I often use Obsidian to write documentation, and various system diagrams often come up. Being able to use characters rather than an image would be great.

In case the “” in the title aren’t clear, I cannot actually offer any financial compensation for this, should a plugin actually be made.
