I read in a journal article, that the rose is actually made of parchment. It looks like wood, but parchment can look the same way, depending on the animal it's from. And I think it's treated with a thin coat of varnish, the same as on the rest of the instrument.

Skill issue.
"Furry companies" is a strange concept to me. The furry community relies largely on individual makers and artists. And sure, the US has the most Furrys at ca. 1/3 of the global community, Europe comes second place at 30%, according to this source: https://expertbeacon.com/how-many-furries-are-in-the-world/
United States – 34%
Canada – 18%
Europe (UK, Germany, Nordics) – 30%
Asia (China, Japan, Australia) – 13%
Latin America – 3%
Africa & Middle East – 2%
It looks like it has cat ears.

Whait what? ORWO? NEW?
It works quite well for madium to large distances. For anything close you'll need equal parts of skill and luck. ; )
Just by estimating the distance and relying on the focus markings. Same as with some vintage cameras I have.
I don't need to cut it to final thickness right away, since I have to graduate the thickness by hand anyway. Being in the ballpark of 3 or 4mm might be enough.
Edit: also, most veneers I found were plain-sawn, and I specifically need quarter-sawn.
Me, a German: "This is clearly a Monks' Grass Mosquito (Mönchsgrasmücke)!"
