@bardmoss @[email protected] @[email protected] I don't want to force her into daylight. I just want to get at least some sleep at night ๐Ÿ˜…

@chickenf622 The problem is that she keeps us up at night and I fall asleep during my work day. She's been here two weeks now.

Help, I think my cat is a vampire

Luna came to us because her previous owner passed away. She didn't eat at all before a trip to the vet, but she is generally healthy.

She hides all day every day until sunset. That's the only time she will eat. She even approaches us for cuddles and playtime, but only at night. All night. We really can't sleep. At sunrise, she disappears in fear as if she forgot who we are.

Any tips on getting her used to daylight? ๐Ÿ˜ช

Is there anything that could help me memorise the argument order of the ln command?

I'll take anything from little helper phrases over shell extensions to replacements written in Rust. I only use the command occasionally, but I need a fool-proof solution. Do you have any tricks to get it right?

@pavel @techsupport @aliceif It wasn't lying. Turns out the drive was fine, actually! It seems like the problem was caused by a dusty M.2 slot.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

@BananaTrifleViolin You are a genius. It's been ten days now and the drive has been working flawlessly.

โ˜๐Ÿป Clean your M.2 slots, everyone.

PNY's own "SSD Toolbox" reports 100% SSD Life (whatever that means) and no available firmware updates. I can also "optimizate" my SSD here, which is funny.

@aliceif @techsupport It's just always the same entry saying something like "command completed successfully"

[โ€“] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (7 children)

@BananaTrifleViolin Good idea. The M.2 slot was left unpopulated for years before I added this drive. It's possible that some dust got in there causing a connection issue.

I re-seated it and wiggled it around a bit to ensure any dust between the contacts got out of the way. It's being properly recognised now, but we'll see for how long.

@aliceif @techsupport I have never seen SMART report an actual problem in a useful way, and also not this time. The drive claims it's fine.

Nevermind, Linux also doesn't like it now. I guess it's faulty. *sigh*

I don't think it's fake. I got it from a local shop which I usually trust.

Has anyone ever had this issue with NVMe SSDs?

"A device which does not exist was specified."

Is this a hardware defect? The drive (PNY CS3140 1TB) is only about 5 weeks old. It seems to fix itself after a couple of reboots, but it's very annoying. Linux doesn't seem to have any issues with it yet.

Update: Solved by re-seating the drive in the slot: https://ma.fellr.net/users/fell/statuses/113883457441026891

Can I charge a 19V laptop from multiple USB ports?

My laptop's charger is rated at 19V 2.1A. I was wondering if it would be possible to build an adapter which would allow me to charge it from a power bank, even if just slowly or via multiple USB ports.

I know you can buy adapters which utilise USB power delivery, but most outlets and powerbanks don't have PD yet.

@thisweekinkde @[email protected] @[email protected] Those are some very good fixes and improvements! You can really tell you guys are finally done with the Qt6 migration stuff.

I am once again considering to write my own window manager

...unless the setup I am thinking of is already possible, let me construct this in your head:

On the top of the screen, there is narrow status bar, which is split into two parts. On the right side of the bar, you have your clock, your battery, your signal strength and so on.

On the left side, there is a clickable tab for every window you have opened. It's like browser tabs: Every window always uses the entire space below the status bar.

On the far left, there could be an icon which opens a searchable list of applications, kind of like #dmenu but vertical. Everything supports mouse input as you would expect.

Does that exist? Should I make it? It would be awesome for smaller screens, like phones.

Edit: I should add that I'm planning to run it on a Nokia N900 with a single 600 MHz CPU core, 256 MB RAM and a resolution of 800ร—480 pixels. Existing full desktop environments like Xfce4, LXDE, and so on are way to heavy to run.

How does sleep really work in the Android kernel?

I've been wondering about this for a while, but couldn't find anything about it. What exactly happens after the screen turns off? Does the kernel actually suspend and halt the CPU? If so, how are notifications received while sleeping? Is there a coprocessor involved?

I'm curious. It would be great if someone could point me towards some articles or videos about this.

Shouldn't elements from the master slide in LibreOffice Impress be locked from editing?

"Elements on a master page can only be changed from the master page view and are protected in the regular slide editing view." (OpenOffice)

...that's is the behavior I'm used to. But in Impress, all elements from the master slide are still editable in all individual slides. I keep accidentally moving them. Is this a setting?

I had a really nice #LinuxGaming moment last night

I finally formatted one of my 1 TB SSDs as EXT4 to make room for #Steam games on my #ArchLinux install.

Then, I installed Transport Fever 2 and played it through my #SteamLink

And you know what? It just worked. It was a miracle! I just happily played for an hour without even noticing I'm not running #Windows. Zero tinkering. Thanks #Valve. โ˜บ

Halo: Master Chief Collection is an absolute broken mess

Last weekend, I picked up the #Halo Master Chief Collection from the Steam sale with a friend. We wanted to play through Halo 1 again, but it was completely unplayable.

You can't always join another player's session.
Occasionally, nothing happens when starting a mission.
On certain missions the game just completely freezes.
At certain points the game locks up leaving you unable to move.

It's just awful.

Okay #Plesk, I'm breaking up with you.

When I was new to #SysAdmin stuff, #Plesk helped me a lot with setting things up, especially email. But this is just stupid. I'm already paying for a server package that comes with Plesk, but it can't administer #PostgreSQL?

Fuck that. I'm leaving.

Any #OpenSource #FOSS alternatives? (Don't you dare to say #Docker ๐Ÿ˜ )

Why are the icons in the Android share menu ordered randomly?

Seriously, I don't get it. It's so annoying, every time I want to share something I have to scroll to find the same App again and again. Is there a reason for this?
