Ask some people why Windows Vista failed and they will tell you that most of the problem came from hardware compatibility. I don't remember ever having problems with Vista back when I used it. Then again I was running it on a brand new computer with the OS in question preinstalled.

And that's another thing, I think you're pretty much expected to upgrade your hardware at least every few years. I'd like to think that the people who had problems with Vista kept the same white-box PC they've had since 98SE, or even 95. Vista ran great if you had the right hardware. Maybe if Microsoft had optimized their OS even for XP-era machines it would have seen greater adoption.

I also really liked the Aero glass theme, it made younger me feel like I was in the future. Those gadgets at the side of the desktop were pretty cool too. Overall I think it was definitely ahead of its time, and with support for current software and hardware, would have been a solid choice for average computer users today.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hilary is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to Southern California tomorrow (Sunday, August 20), lasting until Monday (August 21). This will affect the following:

  • In-person activities and events scheduled for Sunday, August 20 and Monday, August 21 will be canceled or rescheduled.
  • The Bronco Student Center and the Gym (BRIC) will be closed on Monday, August 21
  • University Housing Services have canceled all move-in appointments on 8/20 and 8/21. Additional move-in appointments have been added for 8/22 (Tuesday) and 8/23 (Wednesday), and incoming residents should reschedule to those dates. An early move-in form is also available for those with extenuating circumstances preventing them from moving in after Tuesday.
  • Fall Conference events scheduled for 8/21 have been canceled, and some may be rescheduled to a later date, pending further communication.
  • Critical campus services will continue in-person. Campus employees are encouraged to work from home if they can on 8/21.

CPP expects to return to full operations on Tuesday, August 22.

 

The Bronco Bookstore has announced a new Instant Access program for textbooks and course materials, known as Instant Access Complete. Under the new system, students will be charged a flat fee for access to course materials. Rates are as follows:

  • $250 for undergraduates taking 7 units or more

  • $150 for graduate students and undergraduates taking 6 units or fewer

This replaces the previous per-course pricing system. If you do not wish to participate in IAC, you may opt out before the end of the Fall 2023 Add/Drop period.

Financial Aid for Fall 2023 will be released to students starting today (August 14) and will apply to any outstanding charges on your account, starting with Tuition and Fees. Check your BroncoDirect account for any remaining charges after financial aid has been distributed.

Remaining tuition charges will be due on September 8, 2023 for those receiving financial aid this semester.

 

Add/Drop for Fall 2023 begins today (Monday, August 14) and will last until September 7. During Add/Drop you may add courses, or drop courses without receiving a "W" grade on your transcript.

After September 7 you can still drop a course but will receive a "W" on your transcript. You can no longer add courses after this date.

After September 21, dropping a course will require a serious or compelling reason.
