RULES

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (e.g. politics or societal debates).
  4. Stay calm: Don’t post angry or to vent or complain. We are a place where everyone can forget about their everyday or not so everyday worries for a moment. Venting, complaining, or posting from a place of anger or resentment doesn't fit the atmosphere we try to foster at all. Feel free to post those on [email protected]
  5. Keep it clean and SFW
  6. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc.

A while back I asked what kinds of shoes might work for me and there was a lot of discussion about barefoot shoes. Well, I found a small local sports store that physically sells Lems and I went to try some on.

Wow. These are the best and most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I got them about a month ago at this point and I have probably put 2-7 miles on them every day and according to my Fitbit, that's nearing 100 miles and they're still the most comfortable shoes ever.

So thanks, community! I'm super happy I asked !

I understand America's history of poor treatment of minorities but what has caused many liberal white people to casually talk as if they aren't white.

Some examples:

  • A friend has an eastern European neighbor move in. He says he's glad they are that instead of American white.
  • Feeling they are individually responsible for what their ancestors and/or rich and politically affluent white people did in the past.
  • Acting as if white people anything is bad.
  • Making jokes at their own expense but won't dare say the same thing to another ethnicity.

I don't mean this post as a worm-brained right wing or political discussion, but just seeking to understand this odd internalized behavior I've seen recently.

Rule 3: Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There’s a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it’s vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a “controversial” message for it to be allowed.

I really don't mean this to be about politics but about how people act!

Edit Thanks for the report @[email protected] I tried not to frame this in a controversial manner.

Kind of crazy how time flies. I joined with the api exodus. Since then lemmy has become my primary social media platform. I engage here daily more than I ever did with anything else.

We did it. We finally have a platform that isnt just a dig suceesor. I feel Lemmy is the biggest achievement in open source federated technology since web 1.0 BBS.

I am happy to help contribute to lemmy growth across 2 years, 1.4k comments, and 100 post.

I rarely use reddit anymore for viewing post and never comment on anything by comparison. I run my own versions of the communities that kept me there. I encourage my communities to be a more positive and engaging space and so far its really payed off. I create art and engage in my hobby for Lemmy posting content.

Been good few years here and I'm glad to have this chance to be interacting with all of you. Its nice that were small enough to recognize psudonyms and socially network. Its amazing how being a little friendly and recongizing people across interactions can lead to good vibes all around.

What is a good way to make friends in fediverse?

I have just made one but social skills are not my strength

Hey everyone!

I'm Nick (he/them), I'm 20 and I'm looking for Fediverse friends! I'm former military, and now I'm trying to get into college (Chemical Engineering). I'd love to make friends in STEM, but anyone is welcome!

If you wanna be friends, let me know!

If this is the wrong sub, sorry admins. Idk where to go :(

Almost 30 and I don't remember ever getting such a bad hangover. Heck, I used to get sober on the way home before even crashing on the bed.

I can't see the point of getting on the internet for the sole purpose of taking somebody like say Carol Burnett, who by all accounts was a nice person, and talking about her show, which was very popular, and saying "I don't like it or her, I didn't find it/them funny."

I guess I'm saying I don't really understand unpopularopinion posts. They seem like institutionalized trolling.

Hmm, perhaps this is a unpopular opinion.

One time when I was in highschool, I was having those flashbacks. Memories of things I said that made me cringe. So I decided in order to stop creating more of those, I would keep quiet as much as possible. I'd only talk when someone talks to me.

The next day a classmate had a fight with his friend and switched places to sit next to me. I kept my rule and only spoke when spoken to. It was awkward silence the whole day. By the end I saw him moving back to sit with his old friend.

"I thought you were with droning_in_my_ears?"

"I tried, but he doesn't say anything!"

Damn. Could've made a new friend. That's when I decided better cringe than boring and ended my mute phase.

I have long had a need to have this kind of private hiding place that no one knows about and they can never find me even if they really want.

I have such an old shed thingy where I sometimes go and close myself up for a day and just enjoy being out of everything and anyone’s reach.

Sometimes it’s low key scary because let’s say something happened to me then no one would ever find out but such is life eh.

Such hiding spot is very good for my mental health as whenever pressure gets too high I just disappear.

People may not understand why or why would I do it this way but I don’t try to explain or elaborate. Obviously I pick up the phone and tell them some lie that I am shopping or whatever and will be later or something important showed up thought it would be nice if they didn’t call either.

For me it's hard to pick the best. I love Saving Private Ryan, Band of brothers, Masters of the Air and Dunkirk.

If I had to pick it would be Saving Private Ryan cos I just love it, it has so many incredible scenes and such realistic characters.

I decided to make my wallpaper on Linux a slideshow of Windows XP Bliss memes. I have a good supply now, sourced from google images:

Anyone got more funnies or suggestions for search terms to find good ones?

I noticed there's a few parents and wannabe parents knocking round. How do you want to raise your kids? What values etc do you want them to have?

Whenever it's someone's job to help me, I think of it as an opportunity to create a bright spot in what would otherwise be a pretty boring shift. I make them laugh with my silly commentary, engage them in interesting conversation, and above all, show that I care. I hope it makes them as happy as it makes me. And if it doesn't, well hey, there's always next time, right?

I want to show people that there is still good left in this world. When social media blares humanity's worst all the time, love and compassion need to be loud, too. Cynicism, nihilism, and indifference have pervaded every aspect of our culture and, in my opinion, they just aren't cool anymore. Joy is rebellion. Kindness is radical. Optimism is counterculture.

It may be their job to provide the service, but it's my mission to provide the goofy to whoever needs it. Yes sir, I know this is a Wendy's, but I'm not going to let that stop me!
