I don't get it.

Is this just saying gay guys have a lot of partners? Is this funny?

It's saying that all men are promiscuous/easy. Not a whole lot of distinction there.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 week ago

Oh ok so it is indeed a low effort shitpost.

... It is saying gay men are more promiscuous than straight men.

Straight Guy: 10 sex partners woo!

Gay Guy: (mocking, overly grandiose congratulations)

... The gay guy is just... represented by a picture of a woman, because she is nailing the pose/expression.

It's simple:

  1. Men want more partners
  2. Women want fewer partners
  3. Gay men have more partners (see 1)

The takeaway is if you want more partners, be into men.

... It is alluding to an old and persistent stereotype that gay men are more likely to be highly promiscuous and basically go home with a different dude from the gay bar every night.

This stereotype itself hugely played into the 'Gay Panic' during the onset of GRIDS/AIDS. AIDS was originally called Gay Related ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome because it initially popped up mostly amongst gay men, and the media and culture at the time largely presented it as a scourge from God meant to punish the gays for their evil ways.

I have known a good number of gay men, and at least anecdotally, sure I've known a few who were quite permiscuous, and they'd be the ones to make this kind of meme/joke with a degree of self aware irony, but the vast majority were monogamous and would basically be either moderately or significantly offended at anyone making this joke, and would say that the aforementioned promiscuous gay guys were doing more harm than good by perpetuating the stereotype by making the joke, even ironically.

old and persistent stereotype

Exactly. I was explaining the joke hopefully more clearly for the person at the top of this sub-thread.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Ah ok! I didn't see that. =]

interestingly in real life that is entirely inaccurate across the board for women and men I know. Probably has to do with the type of person I interact with.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Same, but that's the stereotype.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not saying they're more promiscuous, just that scoring men is easy. It's supply vs demand. Regardless, the whole thing is useless as individuals are different and it's such a broad generalization (of shit that doesn't matter and is nobody else's business) that it fails to meet any requirements of humor.

see my reply to sugar_in_my_tea for more of my take on this, but yes I do agree that it is a broad generalization and ... well really, either my way or your way of interpreting it, it isn't really that funny.

Which is a stereotype I'm just tired of. Can we please have gay guys in media that are just normal? Can we not get more Pete Buttigieges?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

alternatively gay men have our own culture and “normal” is conformance… i don’t want to fit into someone else’s box. gay men are by and large more sexual, and that’s not bad. in fact that’s great! people should strive to be more like us: sex is fun, just do it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

The stereotype is tired. My thing is just who cares?
