Confirmation that players will be able to assume the role of Link comes via the US Entertainment Software Rating Board.

“This is an adventure game in which players assume the role of Zelda as she attempts to dispel rifts throughout Hyrule and rescue Link,” reads the classification board’s rating summary of Echoes of Wisdom.

“From a ¾-overhead perspective, players explore various environments while fighting stylized enemies (e.g., humans, creatures). As Link, players use a sword and arrows to defeat enemies; Zelda can use a magic wand to summon creatures (e.g., wind-up knights, pig soldiers, slime) for battle.

“Some enemies can be defeated by being set on fire; other creatures dissolve into mist when defeated. Battle sequences are somewhat frenetic, with several enemies attacking/fighting at once.”

To what extent Link is playable in the game remains to be seen. While some fans are speculating that the title could feature dual protagonists, or a New Game Plus mode starring Link, his role as a playable character could be much more limited.

Hopefully. It'd be super disappointing if a significant portion happens as Link

I was kind of hoping they would make it coop, my SO loves Zelda series and I definitely think they'd love a game with the breadth of BotW or TotK but optional coop elements. Their biggest complaint about those and past gen Zelda games was we can't play together.

Yes, it would seem like a missed opportunity if they returned to their usual formula via a character swap system or something.

Although now I'm imagining a situation where it worked like GTA 5 and you dropped in on Link as he takes his 5th sword swing at a chicken...
