Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If I take a week off of work in America I will lose everything I own and be homeless and die....

Isn't that what freedom is all about? The choice of either slaving away or starving?

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 year ago

Tell that to my immune system.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I do? So I can quit my shitty soul crushing job and everything will just be fine then?

Depends what you want. Do you want your income to be stable and predictable and not too low? Then that's your best bet. More interesting usually comes with less stability or possibly less income to start.

Is a predictable income something people want or something they need?

You keep framing it as if people can just do photosynthesis and keep a house while they have no income

I know if my income becomes any less predictable than it is now I'll be out on my ass

I certainly enjoy not being homeless and would like to continue not being homeless. If I can actually buy some things that aren't the absolute cheapest worst possible option as well that would also be good.

Yes, because there are definitely more options than waste your years trapped in wage slavery. 🙄

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tons. People just generally want to be safe and stable so they gravitate to those kinds of jobs.

Are you suggesting bank robbery? Because it's a fluke those guys got away with it.

Or did they get caught already? I haven't kept up.

To give OP a boon, my friend's mother had a plaque with a saying along the lines of "I was born against my will and I will die against my will. So please let me at least live like I want to."

I think that's a good philosophy to approach your own life and the people you encounter.

I liked the quote until I started to think of the negative parameters of such a saying. It comes down to who is saying it < their intention.

'I was born against my will and I will die against my will. So please let me at least live like I want to.' - Ted Bundy

v.s.

'I was born against my will and I will die against my will. So please let me at least live like I want to.' - Betty White

Well, to come back to your post they chose to live like that to a degree. I guess for themselves it was nice.

I'm going to live like a billionaire... I am going to live like a billionaire.

Mate, you have so very little actual free-will. There's still a debate if you even have free-will at all. If it's even a thing or just a concept we came up with.

Well, at least scientists have identified the hormone that is responsible for the "this was totally my own idea" feeling.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Link? That sounds really cool.

Can't find it right now. If I recall correctly they could measure the "decision" happening before the action was performed.

Or maybe those are two separate studies.

Sure you do buddy.

Euthanasia is totally legal and not shunned upon everywhere in the world.

Hmm. I don't know about that. Maybe certain very rich people have more freedom regarding the way they can live. I just have to do 9-5, no questions asked.

And therefore have the right to end it whenever I feel like doing so.

I mean there are lots of deadly poisonous plants, but legally killing yourself is hard as fuck.

Posting this quote here is pearls to a swine.

This is me trying to explain the difference between "fault" and "responsibility"
