MODERATORS

It can't really be fully predicted how intense the migration, but we are expecting quite a bit.. if previous platforms (especially twitter) are any trend to look towards, expect traffic to intensify a bit. Probably even more than it already has.

For those coming from reddit Please bear with us as well, as well as the rest of the lemmyverse. If you're new to lemmy and the fediverse as platform, you may be confused as how to best find communities right now. lemmyverse.net/communities is a good start, make sure to tick the NSFW community display option. Welcome to the community, and bear with us due to the limitations lemmy currently has as a platform. Things are improving, but for the time being our current content policy is quite strict. It is temporary, and will be elaborated more so in the future as lemmys mod tools improve. There will be a link added to the sidebar that provides info as to why this is.

Be mindful of making sure your NSFW posts are properly tagged as well.

New leamurs, if you're looking around and feeling lost or disappointed, don't give up on Lemmy just yet.

Numbers are growing fast, apps are getting better by the day, and the fediverse is even more diverse than Reddit

If you're looking for a starting place...

  1. <Lemmy.world> is the biggest and most neutral server. It's got lots of content, although discussion about the future is dominating the conversation, so you're going to see the same posts at the top if you don't change the sorting algorithm. People are up for a friendly debate, but it stays civil. Moderation is good, occasionally you'll see removed comments but you're not likely to run into it unless you're being an ass

  2. <Sh.itjust.works> is big and full of shitposts. They're trying out direct democracy... In theory (not a week in and the admin called for a second vote against defederating exploding.heads...i think being very conservative with defederating is good, but it doesn't show a ton of commitment to the idea). It's pretty wild over there, but not in a bad way

  3. <Pawbs.social> furries are always a big presence among early adopters, and they're really welcoming. They don't care if you're a furry so long as you don't judge them, and I've always found them welcoming

  4. <Beehaw.org> is what I'd describe as a safe space. Highly moderated, strict codes of conduct...I can see the value in it, but that kind of vibe makes me uncomfortable. It makes me feel like everyone is on edge, waiting for the next fight. A lot of little like it though, more power to them I guess

And obviously we know why we're here.

Despite what people say about it not mattering where you go, it definitely does matter. Account switching is the one feature every app prioritized - I'd use it until you find a home. Personally, I'm going to start looking for a smaller instance, I think it's important for the fediverse to grow, but I like the feel of the Internet back in high school when it was just getting big, when you made an effort to connect because there were so few people on any given social media

No matter what it is you're looking for, you can find it or build it here - and because of the structure of it, no one can take it from us as long as the dream stays alive

Ironically, the nsfw instance will probably end up being the chillest one ๐Ÿคฃ

[โ€“] ghost_in_the_code 3 points 2 years ago

I know there are some instances that are account only, no communities, and local only shows instance announcements. I think they focus on uptime and stability. I wonder how well those work if you have to find the communities to subscribe to? How likely would other instances defederate them? I think we should have the option to subscribe to an instance and not just individual communities.

[โ€“] FleaCatcher 2 points 2 years ago

Personally, Iโ€™m going to start looking for a smaller instance

Try https://pornlemmy.com

Yes, r/efugees should come inside. Everyone should come inside, always.

;)

[โ€“] untothebreach 4 points 2 years ago

Beat me to it ya cheeky fucker :D

[โ€“] reverse 11 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Tbh I'm not expecting a sudden rush of users. They will come, slowly.

[โ€“] UndifferentiatedDirt 11 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Yeah, this instance in particular I think won't get a big rush until Reddit nukes NSFW content entirely. I could see them doing that in the near future.

[โ€“] gavi 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I truly pray that does not happen any time soon, not just for our sake but reddit as well. But if that happens we will weather that storm together. I do think with reddit going public, it's inevitable though.

[โ€“] kattoboiy 4 points 2 years ago

There's still a bit of hope since even Twitter has "allowed" nsfw content during the days it has been publically traded

[โ€“] usernotfound 2 points 2 years ago

For what it's worth, I have no reason to think that the nsfw subs archived by Lemmit should stop working.

Then the only way to get to reddit nsfw content through a 3rd party app, would be through Lemmy. Now that's what I call poetic justice.

[โ€“] ghost_in_the_code 4 points 2 years ago

If they do nuke NSFW content I just hope we have our shit together for more content creators to easily switch.

[โ€“] usernotfound 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The developer of Relay for Reddit (which miraculously managed to get a reasonable deal with Reddit?) shared that NSFW content won't be nuked until July 5th.

[โ€“] OtakuAltair 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Honestly hoping they do lol; some of my favourite subs don't have a comm here yet

[โ€“] usernotfound -3 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[โ€“] OtakuAltair 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I hope people don't use that as an excuse to not make those comms here... That was the first bot I blocked

[โ€“] usernotfound 1 points 2 years ago

The bot is just there to fill in the content gaps until it's no longer needed. So I'm hoping with you.

[โ€“] sexyreposter 2 points 2 years ago

If reddit removes NSFW they will lose a lot of users

[โ€“] MikeyMongol 3 points 2 years ago

Heh heh heh. come.

[โ€“] gavi 3 points 2 years ago

There's been an increase in sign ups and federated users across the board, so there's that. Most instances in some capacity are struggling a bit to keep up, but it seems to be working mostly.

[โ€“] hedidwot 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Reddit refugee here, and very lost. My understanding is that I only need 1 account, and can, from that one account see and do everything across the instances, fediverse, whatever.

When I search for communities other than NSFW I don't get any results.

Is this NSFW an isolated instance? Are there any quirks I'm not aware of? Am I misunderstanding something?

[โ€“] zabadoh 4 points 2 years ago

Posts and threads from one instance do not necessarily show up when reading from another instance.

Let's take my experience with anime for example.

The biggest anime community that I can find is !anime@lemmy.ml

If I'm logged into lemmy.ml I can see all the threads and posts

If I'm logged into kbin.social, even though I can see and subscribe to the !anime@lemmy.ml community, I only see a fraction of the threads.

This is doubly true for nsfw material. Although free adult material and discussion plays a huge role in attracting new users, many Lemmy instances opted to de-federate from nsfw instances such as lemmynsfw.com, so you can't even see any communities there. You need an account there on lemmynsfw.com to view all the content.

But as previously, even if an instance you're logged into isn't de-federated from an nsfw instance, your local instance gets few threads and posts from that server anyway.

Why is distribution of content so poor across the lemmyverse?

I am not sure exactly how the architecture works, but someone made a flowchart of all the hoops that must be jumped through for content to reach another instance: https://lemmy.ml/post/1411329

[โ€“] denemdenem 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

With defederation left and right (basically isolation but a bit more complex) the 1 account rule isn't necessarily true but starting out it's enough if you have one acc and then when you hit a block (you want to find a community/instance which you know exists but doesn't show up from your instance) then you can start thinking about making alt accounts on said instances.

Currently I have 3 accs because the instances defederated each other and there is no other way for me to view some communities like this. But the android app (jerboa as well but I recommend Liftoff) makes switching between accs easy.

[โ€“] hedidwot 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Appreciate the reply.

So if I'm understanding correctly it seems that this instance I'm on, lemmynsfw.com is defederated from lemmy.radio or something?

I guess holding hands with a nfsw instance might not be popular?

I guess making an account on a larger more general instance might be the go.

[โ€“] wankbank 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think having your primary account on a nsfw, or an otherwise controversial instance is a bad idea (unless you mostly only care about the communities on that instance).

I think a lot of people have alt accounts on this, and their main account on something like lemm.ee, reddthat.com, etc.

[โ€“] DarkShelteM 2 points 2 years ago

Yup. This is the way, for now, at least.

[โ€“] derelict_AD 2 points 2 years ago

Hello world! It's been quite an afternoon finding all the places I want to go now that *points at everything* is going on.

[โ€“] appropriateinside 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I can't seem to see posts on any nsfw communities here. When I go to them it says there are 0 posts.

I have an account, and display NSFW is checked.

Something broke or a config needs to be changed on my account, or?

Edit: Using Liftoff. If I go to the website it works. Any setting in Liftoff related to NSFW has ut unblocked/unhidden

[โ€“] psome 1 points 2 years ago

Works fine for me in android liftoff. There's a nsfw setting under Settings > General as well as on the account signup

[โ€“] gavi 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That edit might explain why. What platform? IOS or android? I'm curious about trying it myself and seeing if the dev hasn't implemented NSFW post display.

[โ€“] appropriateinside 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Android.

Interestingly I can see NSFW posts on my full feed. But if I go to the community itself they show no posts ๐Ÿค”

[โ€“] maxFapper 1 points 2 years ago

Can you try latest master? The APK is available here under artifacts: https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff/commit/81c189b1022bc3bcd976d152ea103ffff010e55a/checks?check_suite_id=14004883747

I remember someone mentioning the fix in chat today. Not sure if it landed.

[โ€“] gavi 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe make a bug report with the liftoff devs. Seems like an issue on their end, but unsure.

[โ€“] SauceNaoBot 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I shouldnt have commented here. The developer is sorry and is fixing their mistakes

[โ€“] Rengoku 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

At the risk of being called an idiot, I want to ask why I cannot see NSFW posts in this instances with Connect and wefwef. Someone please help.

[โ€“] Unanimous_anonymous 1 points 2 years ago

I'm using Connect, and under your user setting, there is a NSFW content viewing setting. I'm also new, so I don't know how that works with your user profile settings when you made your account, but there was a checkbox under the account creation that asks about allowing NSFW content. You may need to log into the account on browser or desktop to change it, or make another account. There might be an option, but I've only been using this for about 2 hours.

[โ€“] SummerBarrymore 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Could someone explain how to properly tag nsfw?

[โ€“] MikeyMongol 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There's a checkbox at the bottom of the posting interface labelled NSFW. Check that box.

[โ€“] SummerBarrymore 1 points 2 years ago

Thank you! I guess I was doing it but didnโ€™t realize โœ
