I loved this film purely for the "monster". A good monster comes on slow, you catch wind of it long before you grasp its true nature, and by the time you get what's happening it's already too late to run. Every time we saw a new critter you learned something new, but you didn't really get to understand what's going on, if at all, until the end.

The rest is all window dressing in support of that, for me. Science Rambo and all, no bother. Just give me a steadily increasing apprehension of dread that never plateaus until all is lost.

For those of you who watched the movie but didn't "get" it (me included). Here's a video from Dan Olsen talking about it: https://youtu.be/URo66iLNEZw.

He also criticises the whole movie review deal on YouTube where they just summarize the movie.

This movie was sooo dumb. The book wasn't any better. "Have you used a gun before, theoretical physicists?" "no" "here's an assault rifle [cue rambo scene]

This is one of those movies that didn't fit with me in any way and I don't understand how so many people enjoy it.

really? i loved it. it's been a while since i watched it but here are some of the things i liked (spoilers ahead)

spoiler

  • every single actor
  • the soundtrack
  • i thought the CGI flora and fauna were quite well done
  • the overall body horror
  • the found footage scene
  • the pool corpse
  • the zombie bear that screams HELP ME
  • the way each member of the squad melts down in a different but logically consistent way
  • i even liked the ending dance routine in the way it establishes that the alien is not inherently hostile

i overall just appreciate that the film had some ambition to try to do something weird and I think for the most part it was successful. and, not to nitpick your nitpick but i think they establish that everyone on the expedition had military experience

When this happens to me, I will often go hunting explanation videos. Often times I rewatch the movie with a new perspective and end up liking it a lot more. It’s also ok to not like it too.

I loved this movie. I thought it was interesting, had palpable dread, and looked really good.

This movie was the best "STALKER" movie. It catches the same vibe and it really just holds that sense of dread throughout.

I knew nothing of this movie until one day my wife asked to watch it. She saw Natalie Portman in an interview talking about it. After we watched it I didn't know why more people weren't talking about this and why it wasn't advertised more. The only thing I saw online about this movie around the time it came out was a RLM review of it, but I think it was already out of theaters.

This movie deserves more love.
