Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Guillotines could cut the economy in half too; I think we may be ready for that

Stop this childish shit. tHe eConMY! What are you, fucking 12? We ALL participate in the economy ya fuckin' moron. Or are you just repeating cutesy shit for upvotes? Yeah, you are.

Climate change just shut down NW Florida. Shut. Down. No one working, no one making money, shut down.

What are you going to do about it?

[–] Pot8o@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 months ago

Oof! Didn't expect an old semi-joke to cause so much angst. It's really just a comment on how often articles talking about how X, Y or Z will impact "The Economy" is mostly about how much money already absurdly wealthy people will gain or lose. Hence replace "The Economy" with "Rich People's Yacht Money" in the headlines to get an arguably more accurate headline. Also I don't think anyone give a shit about upvotes on Lemmy, could be wrong though. As for Florida, I'm not in the US so not super familiar with the climate in various parts of each state but snowfall in Florida seems pretty crazy since I thought Florida is pretty tropical/subtropical. If I have offended you please accept my apology as it was definitely not my intention to offend anyone and especially anyone who is experiencing a natural disaster. I've been through a few cyclones and a bushfire. It's not even slightly fun.

that's what 'muricans voted for or didn't vote to prevent, since before I was born

Well there will be less people. ...maybe by half

It'll be the other half too if we don't figure out a final solution to the billionaire question.

I'm almost wondering if it's looking like the Final Solution to the global warming issue. The oligarchs are all entirely aware that this is a major problem, hence why most of them have their fantasy bunkers prepped and ready to go. The funny part is, they are too short sighted to understand that it'll only last for upwards of maybe a year or so unless they have an entire economy running down there (and none of those bunkers are equipped for it).

If we don't act, it will cut the economy to zero.
