Summary

27 religious organizations are suing the Trump administration over its decision to allow ICE arrests at places of worship, reversing longstanding policy.

The lawsuit argues that detaining immigrants in churches violates the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Faith leaders say the policy has led to decreased attendance at worship services and social programs.

They seek a permanent injunction blocking immigration enforcement at religious sites, unless agents have a judicial warrant or are operating under “exigent circumstances.”

First they came for the Communists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, And there was no one left, To speak out for me...

First they came for queer and trans people, technically, but we even got omitted in that poem

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

The author of the poem was a giant piece of shit who only saw consequences when Hitler went back on his word to leave protestant churches alone. Then he complained, was sent to concentration camp, all while still being a raging anti-semite.

Martin Niehmohler sucks ass.

Looks like his depends is full in the pic.

Fuller than usual. He's probably soiled most of the day since apparently he smells like a sewer.

messing with churches source of income? no bueno

[–] [email protected] 54 points 1 month ago

The churches housing undocumented migrants and fighting to give them sanctuary aren't the megachurches you're alluding to. The church I belonged to while living in the US was housing an undocumented family, and the finances of the church were open to all members so I can assure you we weren't getting any income for doing it.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 month ago

This has nothing to do with money. Traditionally churches have been able to provide sanctuary to people from LEO. Trump has violated this.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

Yeah, add division between whose who fight these reforms. That's exactly what the people in America needs.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

You’ve apparently never heard of a thing called sanctuary.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yep, churches are disgraceful

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Go experience the real world. Many churches are just people trying to do the best they can and aren’t evil.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, many of the people may be well meaning, but the church itself and the religion it represents are evil.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Again go experience the real world. Im not religious but I know a lot if really good people who are and their churches aren’t currently evil.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Buddy, I grew up in that world and know it intimately.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You know ALL the faiths? Seriously put your phone down and unplug.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

What the fuck does that have anything to do with being on the phone? I truly cannot figure out how the two things are related in any way... Sounds like you're stereotyping irreligious people as low information, terminally online, losers.

The conversation is about "churches" in the context of an article about US politics. So I was referring to Christianity, not "all the faiths." What a ridiculous straw man.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

No Im placing you firmly in the “internet atheist” camp that typically knows nothing about religions other than whatever they were brought up in/around.

There are tons of Christian churches and denominations that aren’t evil. The bishop who called out Trump at the Inaugural ceremony is part of one- The Episcopal Church of America.

You’re just espousing religious bigotry and that isn’t ok.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I understand you think churches are “good” based on what? Maybe community? So pay taxes then , what does a priest or pastor really do accept give counsel or average , novice therapy?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

If you have to ask what clergy do, which is more than therapy, do you think you have an informed opinion on religion?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yes, “income”, like food pantries, donated clothing, other assistance to the needy. Any person should be allowed to worship in peace, and any person should be allowed basic necessities from a charity without fear.

No one is raiding charities for wealthy donors

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, leave the poor churches and their tax-exempt status alone!!

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

More churches need to stand up and do the same

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Decreased attendance.

Less donations.

It’s about the money, not the faith.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

That’s an awfully cynical take. Rest assured Joel Osteen isn’t part of the suit.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

The suit needs to mention that to show standing in a way that's accepted by the US courts. According to the US justice system if you are not actively losing money with something you should be happy with it and stop complaining.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

Reached the point of being more evil than Judge Frollo, congratulations.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

This is an Illegal Move by the Radical Lefist preachers -Drumpf, probably

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Why stop at churches? They have no problem expecting their religion to be forced on everyone? Why not fight ICE at every place they try and go into, if you believe what they are doing is illegal.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because traditionally the state has permitted houses of worship to provide sanctuary to people and they wouldn’t get raided by LEO. Trump has changed this policy.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was not saying I don't understand why ICE should not be allowed into sanctuary locations. I'm saying that even the pope agrees the whole administration is backwards on this policy, so why not sue to stop ICE from doing illegal things to everyone, and not just the ones they find in a church.

Apes together are stronger against the growing tide of fascism.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Probably because it's harder to get standing I'm a general sense. But something impacting their Church operations gives them standing to sue.

You need to prove some kind of harm to yourself if you don't want your lawsuit immediately tossed.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

The republicans didn't seem to have any problems doing just that for student loans forgiveness

And before we get into the whataboutism, I'm more showing that we have arrived and past that precedent already. Especially with this supreme court.
