During COVID I had a friend who refused to get vaccinated, or vaccinate his kids because "if I get the shot, it's not like COVID will go away".

He could only be convinced to get it if I could find a way to quantify the level of benefit to his personal life.

It's infuriating to have someone with this style of logic. Nothing should be done, unless it's perfect from the start.

People are surprisingly dumb.

The trick is for one to realize they are people and then to find their surprises.

Sounds like a healthy dose of nothing should be done unless I see immediate benefit for myself.

There's a lot of people who are hell bent on insisting that "the positive thing you want to do" isn't impactful, because it's not "the other thing they want you to do" that's exactly as impactful all by itself.

Pursing should be pursuing

This is the same problem Democrats experience with "leftists" (read: auth-left) in the US

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

usually the issue is democrats dont persue anything the left wants ever but still expect the left to show up for them. and then pikachu face'd when they lose elections.

What like reforms for the working class, making it easier for new homebuyers to purchase a home, eliminating student loan debt, etc.? Yeah nothing the left wants ever.

Inb4 "but they didn't burn down capitalism so none of that counts!!"

tl;dr - None of those were on offer during the election by harris (or the democrats) platform. If you thought they were you're grossly misinformed. If you're going to spout nonsense make sure you have a leg to stand on. If they were and harris wasnt a genocidal ass she might have won.

but I shall address each in turn:

  1. working class reform? and pray tell what reforms have they put bills forward at the federal level in the last 8 years? I'm honestly not even sure what you mean here besides maybe things about unions? AFIAK the democrats havent put forward any bills around these in my life time. Maybe you're referring to the biden admin and democrats strike breaking the very unions they claimed to support?
  2. buying a home is already easy. the problem isnt buying the house, the problem is the lack of living wages/housing supply. the only thing on offer the last election was a 50k no interest loan for a very small and very specific demographic. if you weren't in that group tough titties. Now shall I inform you that 50k does not buy anything for the demographics it was offered to?
  3. eliminating student loan debt: democrats had 4 years to put this issue to rest and they didnt even put forward a bill. biden slow walked as much as he could on forgiveness an restarted the loan payments. the legislature did jack shit to address the actual problems.
  4. etc. okay.

Now let see what the left has been asking for:

  1. do not supply weapons to a fucking genocidal regime.
  2. regulations on corporate property hoarding.
  3. minimum wage adjustment and tying it to inflation.
  4. allow student loans to be discharged via bankruptcy.
  5. free college tuition for state run institutions.
  6. legal minimums for PTO/paternity leave/sick leave.
  7. immigration reforms that treat people as fucking people.
  8. health care reform that actually makes it easier to get the medical care you need. have you tried getting meds for any mental health issues? how about an MRI for that spinal pain you've been having?

See the difference? its pretty stark. The student loan is the only example you gave that is even remotely aligned with left interests and honestly its mainly because of the inability to claim bankruptcy and the lack of living wages causing the issues. we dont care about forgiveness per say and forgiveness was never on offer anyways biden only offered 50k and walked that back to 10k.

Now lets see the major accomplishments during biden admin:

  1. infrastructure act
  2. chips act

Both were corporate give aways. (AKA: kick backs to the oligarchs for their donations to both parties sold as 'job creation')

If the democrats were 1% as effective as trump and the republicans are at passing left wing initiatives they'd never lose an election.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

oh and go read this. tell me the democrats support left wing initiatives after reading it.

This is really the biggest reason to support PR! A multitude of parties means everyone can vote for the one they like rather than having to hold their nose while voting for the lesser of two evils.

Even setting aside the differences in election outcome, just having the ability to vote for the party you really like and having your vote count feels really good.

I held my nose to try to stop Ford last week. I would love to just vote for who I thought would do the best job, not against who I don't want.
