Just in case anyone wants their freezer to live beyond this immediate lack of self-control: never do that. Always simply defrost it.

Anyways. That was my party-pooper post for the day. Have a great one, all.

Even more importantly, your freezer shouldn't be building up ice like that and might need a new seal.

Never realized this. I vow to spread the word

My very first place, gf at the time used a butter knife to chip out ice from the freezer. Yeah, had to buy a new one.

Knowing this, and that a coworker wanted to do the same with the mini fridge I of course warn them about how easy it is to puncture the refrigeration line. And yeah another dead fridge.

a noble fridge was lost... but what was gained??

I came here to say that. Just melt it and then turn it back on after.

what I'm hearing is that the cleaver will need other uses formulated.

You could just twist and roll the shit out of some bread dough if you're feeling industrious. You want a danish recipe?

Is the risk that you might hit something important under the ice?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes. Or pry up some part that shouldn't.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

Plus, it's one of the best ways to ruin a cleaver.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Yes. You'd be surprised how thin these walls are. You puncture them effortlessly. And thereby ruin the freezer effortlessly.

unpacking the grocery bags and there's just not... enough... room...

the cleaver was right on hand and i am ooOHHh sooooo satisfied.

I’ve not had an icy build up in decades. Do Frost-free freezers not exist in the US?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'd say most are frost free. Freezer in mini fridges being a big exception.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

And it is frustrating because there's no technical limitation. The manufacturers just don't make them. It is a simple circuitry with a thermometer and a heating element wrapped around the freezer lines. It doesn't take up any more space or make the mini fridge any more expensive.

i don't even know what this means.

i M a pOoR. isfrost has hack now! ugH.

Icy build-up? Is that an American thing that doesn't affect normal freezers?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Yes, because we can't afford to replace our seals, I guess

transcript: "if you have any pent up anger/frustration, i will now recommend taking a cleaver to the icy-buildup on the walls of your freezer.... very therapeutic."
