I found this quite interesting and informative. Although the videos explicit thesis is that we are leaving / have left the late stage capitalism stage and moved on to something worse I still think it fits this community quite well. It does critique what most people would identify as late stage capitalism: rent seeking, venture capitalism and shifting division of power between the classes.

I also think it fits here as I feel like the Fediverse in general is a sort of counter-movement to the mentioned abuse of personalized feeds to gain power. The fediverse is democratized by design, it is somewhat immune to monopolization and thereby the structures described in that video.

Ich habe eben einen Post gesehen, in dem sich darüber echauffiert wird, dass ein User in der europe-community für die Aussage "Nazi lives don't matter" gebannt wurde. Das wird damit begründet, dass das Volksverhetzung ist.

Nun ist Volksverhetzung etwas, was im deutschsprachigem Raum Meinungsäußerungen deutlich stärker einschränkt, als es international getan wird. Ich möchte hier nicht groß drüber diskutieren, ob das gut oder schlecht ist (bei Volksverhetzungen finde ich diese Einschränkungen per se erst einmal gut, bei Beleidigungen gehen sie mir persönlich aber z.B. zu weit). Daher kann ich schon nachvollzienen, dass eine nicht deutschsprachige Person eine solche Aussage macht und für legitim hält, wir diese aber nicht auf unsrer Instanz wollen.

Mein Hauptproblem bei dem Vorgehen und Anlass für das Verfassen des Beitrags hier ist daher nun folgendes:

Meiner Meinung nach ist es sinnvoll bei unseren internationaleren Communities in Fällen, wo eine im deutschsprachigem Raum speziellere Regel aufgrund von Unwissenheit gebrochen wurde beim ersten mal nicht sofort zu permabannen. Natürlich gehört so ein Kommentar gelöscht. Ich denke aber es ist für die Debattenkultur in den Communities sinnvoller die Person darauf hinzuweisen, Unterlassen aufzufordern (bei viel Geduld auch die Vorteile/Gründe solcher Regeln und Gesetze zu erläutern) und erst beim zweiten mal zu bannen.

I recently moved my files to a new zfs-pool and used that chance to properly configure my datasets.

This led me to discovering zfs-deduplication.

As most of my storage is used by my jellyfin library (~7-8Tb), which is mostly uncompressed bluray rips I thought I might be able to save some storage using deduplication in addition to compression.

Has anyone here used that for similar files before? What was your experience with it?

I am not too worried about performance. The dataset in question is rarely changed. Basically only when I add more media every couple of months. I also have overshot my cpu-target when originally configuring my server so there is a lot of headroom there. I have 32Gb of ram which is not really fully utilized either (but I also would not mind upgrading to 64 too much).

My main concern is that I am unsure it is useful. I suspect just because of the amount of data and similarity in type there would statistically be a lot of block-level duplication but I could not find any real world data or experiences on that.
