News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

The oligarchs are getting nervous. Good. I hope they are a scared. Fuck their platforms and their false backing of “free speech.”

Yeah, the easiest way to control people is when you know what they fear. And, now we know what they fear. They (media/social media/politicians) have been using our fears against us all along, time to see what it is like.

I'm just going to latch onto the top comment...

An actual reddit admin posted this 2 days ago:

Today we are rolling out a new (sort of) enforcement action across the site. Historically, the only person actioned for posting violating content was the user who posted the content. The Reddit ecosystem relies on engaged users to downvote bad content and report potentially violative content. This not only minimizes the distribution of the bad content, but it also ensures that the bad content is more likely to be removed. On the other hand, upvoting bad or violating content interferes with this system.

So, starting today, users who, within a certain timeframe, upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies will begin to receive a warning. We have done this in the past for quarantined communities and found that it did help to reduce exposure to bad content, so we are experimenting with this sitewide. This will begin with users who are upvoting violent content, but we may consider expanding this in the future. In addition, while this is currently “warn only,” we will consider adding additional actions down the road.

We know that the culture of a community is not just what gets posted, but what is engaged with. Voting comes with responsibility. This will have no impact on the vast majority of users as most already downvote or report abusive content. It is everyone’s collective responsibility to ensure that our ecosystem is healthy and that there is no tolerance for abuse on the site.

This was the only thing left reddit had going for itself: that users can influence the algorithm with their votes.

As someone who switched to feddit just a few days ago I can say this has been building up. Small things like deciding which comments get visibility, phasing out old.reddit, doing nothing about bots, introducing bot/karmafarma-friendly mechanisms, an uptick in pro-MAGA posts/comments as well as disinfo bots ... but still, this feels like an uncharacteristically large step.

"check for violence" for any comments that contain the word "Luigi".

This is gonna make Nintendo retro-garming discussions really awkward.

We all know what’s gonna happen next. The Admins will lock out the remaining mod and take it over for being “unmoderated” and install their own puppets like nothing ever happened.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago

It's that whole "slash funding, complain it isn't working, privatize" approach on a smaller scale.

[–] [email protected] 76 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

they ban for upvoting "eat the rich" too.

yet reddit admins never had a problem with thedonalds posters litteraly saying people should be shot and other violent rhetoric for years. the key difference is this time the billionaire class got upset.

Yea, my blessed Fediverse brethren, hear ye!

Mark thy holy lemmings, gird thy loins with smelling salts and prepare for the unwashed tides. The memes will be terrible and swift, and no one will be safe from the waves of idiocy.

Tremble, for the 2nd Dawn of the Age of Incelius has arrived, and the Reddexodus Reddux is upon us!

I lost my 14 year old Reddit mod account. That modded a million plus subreddit. Because I made a joke that McConnell was close to death. Which he is. But they banned me before having to offer me stock options. Cunts.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

reddit is making way for right wing-only content, they allow "other side content" to drive up engagement.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Remember what killed Digg? Sarah Palin super users getting Republican content to the top of Digg. That will just kill Reddit off sooner.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago

People often think it was the encryption key controversy that broke Digg. Nah, the massive vote brigades and cliques operating blatantly on the open were the first nail. The second nail was Digg redesign with the stated goal of "power users are good ackshually and no way this will go wrong"

If random ordinary users don't have any power on the site anymore - won't be heard and will just be punished for ordinary actions - what has Reddit really become?

That’s why I’m here. Reddit started getting super censored so I was looking for an alternative and was directed here. It’s fucking ridiculous.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Same. I originally came here after they killed off 3rd party apps, then I figured out how to patch RiF again and didn't spend as much time here.

The propaganda and misinformation have gotten to be too much. Advice subs are all fake AI stories. Admins are making a fuss about people breaking the rules, but refuse to disclose what the rules actually are.

I really enjoy Lemmy. The downside is that it's not as easy to organize (and find) niche spaces like on reddit. I'm hoping the small communities have grown more since the first mass migration.

You can now get in trouble for upvoting something. How absurd.

They banned my old reddit account because I reported fake news that was being posted on r/conservative. Apparently subreddit mods can report users who use the report tool and can just get you banned.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

And then they say "if a user is breaking the rules, don't engage, use the report button."

It's not like we don't have mod drama but at least when you're federated, stupid decisions get limited to a single instance and others can simply defederate. Does allow for pretty... erm, interesting views you don't see on Reddit.

There's going to come a point when the things we can't say may need to be said. A time when the message is delivered with blank comments.

[ . . . ] will carry a message of it's own that becomes much more difficult to ban.

The fact that people still use reddit is insane to me.

I've been on lemmy for like a year and

  • the worst thing that's happened on lemmy is that nicole botspam

  • meanwhile Reddit has done at least 3 heinous unforgivable things in that time

My 11 year old account, very active account, was recently banned from reddit but I'm not sure why. They deleted the comment so I'm not sure what it said. But I've been posting there for 11 years with no issues so something has changed.

I believe the comment I made was talking about if the US invaded Canada and I said they would be hard pressed to hold the country because Canadians look like Americans and we would take the battle across the border.

It's a common sense statement. Doesn't incite any more violence then quoting half the things Trump says about Canada any given day.

I think Reddit is purging the left leaning accounts and making a Nazi safespace like Twitter.

So sad…I loved Reddit…I’m so sad to see it come to this. I’m so sad for all of the young people who think this is how the internet should be…..

[–] [email protected] 25 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Reddit has been doing this shit for years. It's a big reason why I left. Spez (little piggie) was only the catalyst.

A few ban-happy,power tripping moderators did come over here, though. I don't have specifics on that, I just know I've seen them, and I've also been banned for some real dumb shit. I just stay away from those communities/instances.

My ten year old Reddit account got banned for a single snarky comment about Luigi, so here I am!

Good. I hope Reddit tears itself apart. After having three accounts banned because I was better at insults than the one trying to haze me I think that site had run its course.

Luigi Luigi. Luigi Luigi Luigi. Luigi, Luigi Luigi hahaha. Luigi Luigi.

So do we all sign back into our old reddit accounts to say "Luigi" until permaban?

Damn I thought reddit would stay save from the new usa censorship. Next step will ban liberal or anti trump posts and communities for sure. Seems like I moved to Lemmy at just the right time.

Reddit's strategy is to replace all users with AI bots rented from Elon.
