What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

Nothing quite says “high-performance muscle car” like a popup ad for a Mopar Extended Warranty covering your whole center console. That’s right, Dodge Charger owners are now experiencing an exciting new feature: pop-up ads that appear every time the vehicle stops at a light. This garbage feature was spotted in the wild, take a look at how it looks.

Return the car, stop buying a single vehicle from them. Point and laugh while we watch them go down.

Is the only reasonable response to this.

I don't think it's that easy to just return a car.

What I really want is the EV equivalent of an old Jeep. No antennas of any kind, no "infotainment", no radio / music, no bluetooth support, no nothing not related to going from A to B. If I want to call somebody, I'll pull over and use a phone. If someone calls me, they can wait until I'm not driving.

There are companies that will convert old Jeeps and other vehicles to electric.

Thanks for pointing that out!

I think usually you provide them with a donor vehicle and they swap in the electric motor (something like this Wrangler example). They tend to leave the gearbox as is by the looks of it.

I really want an old VW bus converted. The new EVs are so ugly.

That's cool for your exotic collectible vehicles you take out on sunny days but I don't know if I'd want that as my daily. Modern cars, while plagued with massive corporate bullshit, also tend to be much much safer for occupants and external parties, as well as coming with creature comforts I'm not sure I'd like giving up.

I’ll just avoid it all together by not buying one but holy shit that would make me break my warranty so fast to jailbreak it to make that shit stop

[–] technomad@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you jailbreak them though?

I’m sure a way will pop up eventually if there already isn’t one, haven’t actually checked it though cos I’m not touching that car with a ten foot pole
