Do not redeem

Nicole should start accepting monero.

[–] [email protected] 52 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I feel bad for the real "nicole" who is probably some innocent woman who got her pics stolen

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They keep getting new photos, so she might be in on it.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or just someone with access to her webcam

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

This seems likely cause she never seems to actually pose for any of the pics. In every photo it just looks like someone staring at their laptop screen.

Probably some malware on her machine that takes a snapshot every few minutes when she's using her PC and sends it to the attacker. It's possible she has no idea.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When she finds out about this she can do an ama and be a superstar for one day

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago

"Hi,

I'm the real Nicole. I got all my pictures stolen, my identity has been tainted and life is very hard for me now, because of these scammers.

Please send help! Here's my bitcoin wallet. "

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Could you drop the BTC address? I wanna look at the transactions.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Oh, do let us know.

Also, you can do that?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yep, Bitcoin is a public ledger. If you run a full node you can see all the transactions yourself. Or, you can just use services online and explore the blockchain itself by searching a Bitcoin address.

Here’s the activity of the mentioned BTC address: https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1H5qsQHFgQbLGgk1qDMTBiVFaxBdSZVFTy

At time of this comment, it’s a brand new address and has made no transactions. Wallet balance is 0 BTC.

For the other address, Litecoin, I don’t know anything about that crypto so I can’t find it when I search online LTC explorers. Don’t know if LTC is a public ledger like BTC, and frankly I don’t care enough to find out.

Edit: on mobile, fixed rhe inevitable typos

How much have they raked in?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Both wallets don't have any transactions so it doesn't seem like anything. I kind of want to do more investigation into whoever runs nicole honestly.

I like that it is "nicole101" like a tutorial showing you the scam early, so that when you see the og nicole you can already know it's a scam even though there is no btc there.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'd love to see a crypto scam that would send money back with the message along the lines of "okay, you shouldn't have done this. Here's your money, don't fall for that stuff again"

I feel lied to and taken advantage of. Nicole, I thought we were pals!?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

The true pals were the Nicoles we got catfished by along the way.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

There is the possibility that this is a copycat. It's hard to tell since the OG was already using multiple random accounts.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

This is not a copycat. This is the official account. The scammer first announced this on the Matrix. I reported first in this post.

New Nicole just dropped

[–] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago (3 children)

A new picture again, isn't it? I wonder who the person is. Maybe it's really the "hacker" or they downloaded their insta? Are the photos even insta material? Where would you upload the variety of images of her? Or are they screenshots from conversations? I kind of want to know but I want it to not be creepy

[–] [email protected] 33 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The current most likely theory of the people that dove headfirst into this seems to be, that she was a small streamer on peertube and other platforms (hence the many different webcam images, too). Looking into the chat of the stream on her peertube account reveals at least one person, that had all their messages removed by her. The linked accounts on the most common spam messages feel more like doxxing attempts, too - with ones like this asking for money most likely being copycats, as in the original messages and linked communities, there was a suspicious lack of asking for money or trying to start contact for a romance/catfishing scam.

This would all point to some kind of crazy stalker trying to doxx this woman for whatever reason, in a pretty weird way. Maybe they hoped it would get us all riled up and hating on her? Maybe they thought by just seeing her, we'd react in some way? Maybe they just wanted the feeling of power to doxx and intimidate her, and no real plan beyond that?

Whatever it is, it really looks more like creepy shit than scam shit at this point, from what I have gathered in the community research that has been happening.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (5 children)

I'm waiting for them to come to Lemmy and make a post explaining things. That would be very interesting.

Every photo I've seen of "Nicole" looks like it was grabbed from a video call, including the fake social media pages someone linked to.

Money, in this economy?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Ah, now it makes sense! Wonder how many suckers actually paid something?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

A grand total of 0.

Both wallets are empty and have no transactions.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait, you can do that?

I have no idea how Bitcoin works.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes. Bitcoin, as most cryptocurrencies, has an open ledger, meaning all transactions (and, by extension, wallet amounts) in the network are public. Everyone can see any transactions associated with any wallet.

Thereby, if someone knows a certain person is an owner of a given wallet (and the effort is to associate those two things by introducing identity verification on all major exchanges), they can know every transaction you have ever made. In fact, there are several analytical companies (for example, Chainalysis) that process this very information in bulk to help authorities combat criminal activity.

There are cryptocurrencies in which this data is encrypted, like Monero. There, you cannot view transactions associated with the wallet address unless you got a special key only the wallet owner can give to you.

There are also cryptocurrencies like Zcash, in which you can choose whether to encrypt your transactions or not.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Imagine if actual wallets worked like that, and everyone knew what your bank balance was.

That's wild.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Might actually be good in some ways - less options to hide ill-gotten gains, or to award people wildly different salaries based on what they're ready to settle for.

I believe in Sweden, for example, the information on income should legally be public for everyone.

I miss when she was "bjorky"...

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She looks angry at me because I'm too poor to help her father.
