Finished Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations .

Great game. Loved the story, the new and the returning characters, and the cases themselves.

The game made me hate certain characters, and really annoyed at certain other ones, which shows how well everything was written.

It's the best Phoenix Wright game yet.

Next in the series is Apollo Justice. Not going to get it right away, but will probably get it later this year.

Started Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition !

It's nice to see it getting great reviews, though I have just seen the numbers and haven't actually read anything or even watched most of the trailers. Wanted to go as blind as possible.

I am only about an hour and half in, so can't say anything about it, but my first impression is that the game mechanics in start are more overwhelming, at least when compared to XC 3, but it is an older game.

I do like the weapon system though, but I haven't gotten the full understanding yet.

One thing I didn't like is that I'll have such a big list of party members but ca have only 4 in my party at a time. I always have FOMO when leaving out my party members. This is something I loved in XC 3. But that's for the future, I don't even have 4 people in my party yet.

Played a bit more of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

I was playing as Elf mage, but as I mentioned my FOMO with party members above, I have same issue with different classes, and I am not going to play such a big game twice, so I started new game on other save as Qunari warrior. And while I enjoyed playing that, I realised game isn't different enough with different classes to worry about it too much, so went back to playing my elf mage.

I am about 10 hours in, and am still enjoying the game. Different locations have different biomes and feel very different from each other. There are quests for different locations, factions and companions. You get (slightly) different dialogue depending on your race, class and faction.

One issue about companions, during quest conversation, companions don't intervene at all. I have been bringing companions that match the faction for the sidequests, but during the conversation where I am getting the quest, or talking with someone that progresses the quest, it's just me and the NPC. For main quests, there is generally one companion that is required to be in party, and that one does take part in the quest, but other than that it's just like I am alone.

Companions do talk during the quest, giving their opinions and suggestions, and also talking with each other about things that have happened or the location they are currently visiting, but if they had added a snippet or two from relevant companions for side quests too, that would have improved the experience much more.

I'll probably be playing just these two games for the forseeable future, specially since I am going to be quite busy for next couple of weeks and won't have too much time to play games.

What about all you? What have you been playing?

I bought Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe a couple weeks ago and I'm a few stages in. Having a good time with it so far. Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and enjoy a nice easy game to relax. I'm even enjoying the minigames in the Merry Magoland mode and getting all the masks (I will rarely use, lol).

I also bought Pokemon Alpha Sapphire because I've never finished a Hoenn region Pokémon game, but I haven't started it yet because I'm still playing through Fire Emblem Fates Conquest. Like others I agree that Fates' story, especially Conquest's, is probably the worst I've played in the franchise (seriously, the game utterly fails to give Corrin any reason to choose Nohr when they make their "fateful" choice that's supposed to be so difficult), but the gameplay is not bad. I would put it down for Pokemon but considering FE is my favorite franchise I feel a certain obligation to grit my teeth on the story and push through it to the finish.

Agreed, sometimes it's nice to just play an easy game and relax.

I like the idea of Fire Emblem, but wasn't a big fan of Monastery area in Three Houses (my first FE), I believe it was just me being anxious about not properly handling relationships and missing out on good side characters. Plan to play Engage though, it looks like something I may enjoy.

I'm playing through Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS, so good! I'm a sucker for the SMT games and it's making me want to get V on the switch, so I'll probably be doing that soon. Also, I really enjoy the 3D effect and play with it on consistently.

I'm still finishing ToTK, as I'm 100% it and it just takes an insane amount of time I simply do not have. And as always Animal Crossing on the switch.

I've also booted up ZombiU on the Wii U and am playing through that again late at night. It really encapsulates how much of a missed opportunity the Wii U was. What a fantastic, unique gaming experience it is.

P.S. I am tempted to buy XCX on the Switch, as I played it religiously on the Wii U, but I'm still mad they shut down the servers when I was still playing with some friends online and enjoying the social aspect it brought. So, I'll probably just start over and play it on the Wii U single player.

I have been interested in SMT V, but am afraid of the difficulty, I am not very good at these games.

I can understand not wanting to pay again for a game, specially when they stop supporting it. There are some quality of life changes in Switch version though, if you need a reason to justify buying it again. Nothing wrong with playing on Wii U again, if you don't care about those though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately, I don't think there's enough improvements to justify $60 again, but I'm a cheapskate.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

No, $60 isn't a small amount, and very few games are worth buying again (in my opinion).

Should not be too much of a problem.

I didn't find the Normal setting too hard, but if you struggle with it there's an Easy difficulty and IIRC you can change it at almost any time. And there's even a Free DLC adding a Super Easy "Safety" mode.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

Interesting. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info!

I am also playing Xenoblade Chronicles X. Since I played through half of it in the Wii U era, I feel so comfortable picking the dialogue choices that I wouldn’t dream of selecting on the first play through. There’s a lot of funny stuff in the dialogue trees!

I just reached chapter 4!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Oooh, nice. I haven't gotten time to play since the release date and am still at the first chapter. Other than the first conversation, haven't had any conversation with multiple choices, IIRC. Are they just different ways to say something or do they effect anything?

Looking forward to playing more soon.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It’s pretty simple: they repeat the dialogue because “you didn’t understand it” (but will often throw shade before they repeat their explanation).

The other case has to do with affinity. There’s often two opposite dialogue choices. The polite one will get you affinity points with polite party members. The rude one will get you affinity points with more rebellious party members.

There are also risky/cautious choices, braggart/humility choices, etc. I just feel freed up to not be an upstanding member of NLA since I took that route about ten years ago.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 hours ago

Hehe, I just came across the one at the end of Chapter 1. It was fun.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I don't know. I made the mistake of playing new games as they have came out plus getting games on steam sale 😭

So.: stellar blade, Xenoblade 3, kingdom come 2, planet zoo, final fantasy 14 (I can't stop, it's been years, someone help me) split fiction with the wife,

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Hehe, I try to only play one game (per platform) at a time, but I recently ended up starting 6-7 games. Taking a break from all of them now though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

How are you liking split fiction?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Couple of my friends have played it, and they are calling it a strong GOTY contender.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

It is super fun.

Finished Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations

Glad you liked it! I think it's still one of the best games in the series to this day, with only two others (Investigations 2 and Great 2) being contenders for the top spot.

Next in the series is Apollo Justice. Not going to get it right away, but will probably get it later this year.

AJ is unique because it's fairly ambitions and tries to make major shifts in direction in the series. It doesn't succeed (a VNDB review calls it a "beaultiful failure"), but the fact that it tried to be different still makes it an interesting experience.

Started Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition ! my first impression is that the game mechanics in start are more overwhelming, at least when compared to XC 3, but it is an older game.

I've always felt that overwhelming the player with mechanics is part of the "Xenoblade experience". 😆

But yeah, I agree XCX goes a lot higher in complexity than other games. Been a while since I played it in the WiiU but I'm pretty sure I beat the game without completely figuring out some of the mechanics.

I always have FOMO when leaving out my party members

That was a major pain point on the original WiiU version as people outside your party didn't get any experience, making it much harder to swap team members an get affinity to unlock their storyline. Thankfully it looks like this was fixed in the Switch version.

Playing Trails Through Daybreak II!

Reached the Final Chapter. It's a good game and I'm having fun, but it's definitely in the lower tier of games in the Trails series.

Story is weak, relying too much on certain (annoying) tropes that Falcom loves to use. It's also lacking the higher stakes and more adult themes that I praised the first game for, and feels like it was rushed and needed a bit more development time.

Played the Atelier Yumia Demo!

One thing I respect about Gust is how they are always experimenting and trying new things with the Atelier series. Yumia feels very different from recent entries, more serious and story-focused instead of slice-of-life.

Exploration is open world, even more than Ryza 3. Combat is similar to the Ryza series being an ATB variant, but adds a bit more action elements like movement and dodging. Alchemy is a bit simpler (at least at first glance) but comes with some interesting QOL features like the ability to synthesize common items while exploring the world.

My initial impression is that I'm going to enjoy this game, but it probably won't make my list of "Favorite Atelier games". Let's see if the full game changes my mind.

Let's hope so. I would be really annoyed if they didn't get any experience.

As for Trails Through Daybreak 2, they seem to have annualized the series. This one was released just an year after the first game. They should probably start taking some time.

As for Trails Through Daybreak 2, they seem to have annualized the series. This one was released just an year after the first game. They should probably start taking some time.

Trails games are usually released in pairs, then there's a break before the next one. The developer works on a "one game per year" schedule, so they rotate between Trails, Ys, and sometimes a new/different game like the recently announced Tokyo Xanadu sequel.

The reason we've been getting so many of them in the west is because we were far behind on releases, Daybreak 2 has been out since 2022 in Japan! From what I heard NISA is very happy with the sales of the series, so they've been been rushing to localize the remaining ones.

Right now there's only one left until we're finally caught up (Kai no Kiseki, released in Japan last September), then we're probably waiting a couple years for the next one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I actually went by the Japanese release schedule. Daybreak and Daybreak 2 released within year of each other. With trails game, I guess they can reuse assets from one game to next, at least within a series, so that should decrease the development time. Still, quite a feat in these times for a dev to release game each year.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Yup, there's a ton of time saving there since most of the games in the series are part of a "duology" that takes place in the same country, with the same characters and so on. Which is also good for players since waiting only one year makes it less painful when a game ends up in massive cliffhanger. 😆

Though I just double checked and Reverie -> Daybreak -> Daybreak 2 were all one year after the other which is highly unusual, even more because Reverie -> Daybreak not only takes place in a different setting but also marks a change of the in-game engines.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

It is possible that they have multiple internal teams which are working on different games in parallel, with each game in different phase of development.

I'll see if I can find some interviews or details about how they develop games. Would be an interesting read.

So, I've already finished the main story for Monkey Ball Banana Mania. I'm still messing with the challanges and special stages, but I'll soon start my next big RPG: Metaphor.

As for Monkey Ball, it's not what I've expected. I thought about getting some chill precision based gameplay, but it's actually quite stressful. Kinda like I'd imagine games like Getting over it, just with really short stages. I got a bit frustrated around when the difficulty spiked, but at some point the game just clicked and grinding stages almost became akin to meditation. I can see myself returning from time to time to improve my times.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Didn't know Monkey Ball has a story, but the gameplay has always looked stressful to me, so never even tried to get it. Glad it clicked for you.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's called story mode, but you just get a small cutscene every 10 stages to introduce the next theme - like a space station or a factory.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

Ah okay, got it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Decided to do a replay of Cattails: Wildwood Story in between my Balatro runs.

The former is pretty cute, fairly low stakes adventure/exploration game. Once you befriend the cats in your colony town you can start taking them along as adventure companions too, which is helpful especially in the mining areas.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I played the original Cattails but couldn't get into it. I liked the idea of the game, but for some reason couldn't get into it. Don't recall what the issue was.
