You may not like it, but this is what peak Buy It For Life looks like.

Amateur hour! The cinder blocks are all aligned and could more easily tip over; stagger those joints! The top will scratch your phone; put a piece of wood, cardboard, or an old shirt on top to protect it. Also, throw away that phone box, that shit ain't collectable.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Maybe I'll need that phone box in the future

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I will admit that I store old phones in the original box.

Same with some old computer parts.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

I used to do that.

Now I use a box cutter and cut out any bar codes or serial numbers off most of the boxes and put them in the motherboard box with the rest of manuals and accessories. It was hard at first but it's been good.

Cinderblocks are literally just legos for adults. Not because it's more mature or anything, but because it's cheaper.

Except, you know what I discovered just LOVES to live in cinder blocks? For instance the stack I had on my balcony? Black Widow Spiders, that's who. Whole families of them, each in a section, with egg sacs.

They also destroy your toes if left in the bedroom.

Imagine building a whole building with these cursed blocks

Furniture maker here: Would a night stand with open cubbies on the front like that be popular? That would be fairly easy to build out of wood.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Honestly yeah.

The ability to have your mess slightly better organized, and cheap.

Yeah

It's basically the cinder-version of an Ikea Kallax shelf, which also allows per-cubby accessories like baskets, doors, and subdividers.

I think this is less "male" and more "poverty".

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago

You can probably find a used nightstand for free easier than finding/buying those blocks to haul to your apartment.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

An iPhone and an MagSafe charger is not poverty …

First thought in a male brain seeing this: "wow, practical".

Then i saw the text.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My first thought was : that is a stout table, not going anywhere, modular , hmm 🤔

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Modular storage system. Our proprietary ceramic material comes from natural mineral and reclaimed resources. Modern industrial aesthetic leverages influences from brutalist architecture. Available as individual components or engineered systems. Call to schedule a consultation."

How many months ago do you figure he dropped that pen back there

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

day he put the side "table" in for sure

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The design is a awesome, but come on don't put it directly over the floor, put a rag or something under it.

Just jealous because I didn't need $40k to furnish my home.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 month ago

Amazing brutalist aesthetic

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago

I scraped my knuckles just looking at that

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago (4 children)

It's quite clever until you stub your toe on it at 4am.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Would it hurt anymore than a normal bedside table though?

Yeah you gotta cover those cinder blocks with a little fabric

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fabric? That sounds dainty. There's no budget for dainty.

Yeah, seriously, make that in wood and it would be a hit.

The most popular shelves are just a bunch of cubes, one side open, slapped together.

First thing I thought of when I saw that is "Hey, that's just Kallax!"

My girlfriend and I have just moved into a new home and we're decorating the living room. It's still a work in progress, but we've painted the wall and put up some Kallax!

There's going to be some drawers and doors and stuff, but this is what it looks like so far ❤️

Edit: for those of you eagle eyed enough to think "wtf even is that in the picture?" I can explain. It's a pokéball drinks coaster made from hammer beads!

I like it except would definitely have to put those little round felt pads for chair feet under it to protect the floor.

My grandmother had a stack of these in her basement and had them all crisscrossed. It is where she stashed her money. She claimed it was fireproof, she didn't have to memorize a combination and nobody would take the time to pull them all apart if they didn't know what was in them.
