All about dogs - dog breeds, dog training and behavior, news affecting dog owners or handlers, puppy pics, etc.

Rules (Will be refined later on).

  1. Don't be a dick. This should cover most things, just keep in mind that everyone started somewhere and try to be helpful rather than rude or judgmental.

  2. No personal attacks based on training style or tools.
Discussion of balanced training including proper use of aversives is allowed here.

  3. All breeds and mixes are welcome. You can criticize backyard breeding practices but don't pile on people because they own a specific breed or prefer purebreds or mixed breeds.

  4. Do not support backyard breeders or puppy mills. Please do not link to or suggest buying from high volume breeders or those with an obvious lack of standards and testing.

  5. Do not help or support fake service animals. Please do not encourage people to buy fake service dog vest or ESA letters to get around rental or other restrictions & do not give advice on how to misrepresent a dog as a service or support animal.

Dalmatians are prone to kidney stones. It means they can’t eat foods that are high in purine. They have the same diet as a human diagnosed with gout.

In the 60s some guy started working to breed that gene out of them and created to versions of Dalmatians. HUA have the gene that causes stones. LUA do not. He did this by mixing in Pointers.

Modern LUA Dalmatians are 99.999% Dalmatian but breeders and the Dalmatian Club of America are still salty about it and refuse to accept it.

TLDR; Dalmatians LUA breed less prone to life threatening conditions, but Kennel Clubs are mad about it.

wtf.

Reminder that kennel clubs don't give a shit about animal welfare.

See how they reward German shepherds with the lowest hips possible, like car guys lower their cars until they drag on the ground with sparks flying. It's horrible for their hips and backs.

Cartoon dog after running straight into a mountain painted to look like a road vs. the same dog after using a bellows to reinflate themself.

Omq the bby looks so much happier and healthier! Happy and functional snout is far more cute ♡

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

This sounds good, but is still dumb, somewhat less incestuous inbreeding.

For love of dog just stop breeding. There are so many unwanted dogs already that need homes.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mutts are better anyway. I'm biased because the best dogs I've known were not pure-bred, but still. They also are more resistant to genetic disorders...

I like to call them Bitsa dogs, like a bit of this dog a bit of that dog and you get a wicked bitsa dog.

I'll never understand why people even want pugs. They are not cute, they are ugly abominations. Maybe they were cute before people turned them into this.

They used to be very cute and were functional dogs. Altdeutscher mops and retro pugs are good examples. Here's an 1800s painting of one.

People are drawn to vulnerable creatures; they inspire nurturing and protective instincts.

Pug breeders attempt to distill vulnerability to include overly large eyes and an inability to breathe well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 hours ago

This is partially the case... the large eyes, round head, and flat face resemble that of a human infant. That is what triggers the instinct.

It's the same reason Grogu (Baby Yoda) became so popular. Exact same archetype, triggering the exact same instincts.

What's with the thick white borders on lemmy lately? What's the use of adding these? I know there are people who are too lazy to crop their screenshot but in this case someone took the effort of doing the opposite of cropping the image. Why?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

OP here. I stole this from Facebook and I am simply too lazy to crop anything rather than just hitting the share button

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you're on windows shift + windows + s lets you drag a window that's instantly screenshotted and in your clipboard ready to be pasted. You can rebind this function to the screenshot key too

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

I think Win11 automatically opens snipping tool with screenshot button now. My laptops all seem to work that way now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

yeah i get being lazy, i was targeting the person who shared this meme but decided to add white borders

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think cropping already low-res jpegs will recompress them again and make them even lower quality

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

Could always encode as PNG or similar, as those aren't lossy.

still better than unnecessarily taking up space on your screen

Still sort of grotesque in that there are probably a lot of inbetween generations that suffer. Most ethically sound idea is probably to just euthanize these breeds and end them entirely.

Imagine what people would do if they were allowed to selectively breed humans

That's just called eugenics

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Don’t sperm banks offer selective sperm choices based on intelligence and physical fitness?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

intelligence? as if being brought up by a parent who believes this shit is gonna make you intelligent

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's ZERO regulations in that industry, they can say whatever

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

One of the "most prolific" sperm donors in Britain is a neo-Nazi. His sperm has been used to bring about over 140 births, but he also spends his free time planning "lone wolf" attacks.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (3 children)

People on 4chan were talking about that sort of thing at least 15 years ago. I think it was on /tg/, if I remember. They were also much more concerned with the trolling/ethical thought of breeding for the brain. What if you bred someone who only had the thought of serving a master?

I think that's enough evidence for me that selective breeding is horribly fucked in its outcome no matter the original aims, and the closest we should come is eliminating the 'will kill you' diseases.

There are some sci fi stories about this. They are... not pretty.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 19 hours ago

I will follow the Kwisatz Haderach without hesitation.

What will those clever tall bastards think of next?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

I predict hairy sphynx cats

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

No need to do them next: "Altdeutscher Mops" is a thing already. I guess you'd call them "Old German Pugs" in English?
