The stuff Netflix puts out, particularly the documentaries are far better quality than just about anything I’ve seen on cable or tv. I know people like to shit on Netflix but they have better content than most

Streaming services are crap. For new years I wanted to give myself streaming for a month and nothing looked good. I didn’t get anything.

Literal enshittification!

While also raising their rates, of course.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 hours ago

Yep, cancelled my subscription the day they announced the two-tier plans.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 hours ago

Hey, that sludge pipe wasn't cheap!

Netflix subscribers: "I just like to watch shows."

Gosh, if only there were another service, or another way to do that. Shucks.

Doesn't your library let you borrow DVDs? Seems outdated but I very recently binged three seasons of Succession thanks to my local library!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 57 minutes ago

In my country the library barely exists lmao… sad life.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 hours ago

So what you're saying is, Happy Gilmore 2 will not save streaming?

[–] [email protected] 30 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I saved up a bunch of shows and waited all year to binge in one month over the summer and cancel.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

may I recommend…

✨piracy✨?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I love your recommendation. Unfortunately I am very out of the loop with that sort of thing these days. And I’m without resources if I accidentally break something. I need my desktop for work as well. I’d be happy to read up on the topic if you could suggest some reputable sources that someone without a tech background could break down. It’s why I save it all up until summer. So I pay them as little as possible.

I beleive this is where dbzer0 would come in... So basically, you are going to want a VPN first, which they are pretty easy to get and use and there are plenty of resources online, I would suggest going for a trusted one such as Proton VPN or Nord VPN. Then as for how to actually get movies/shows, you are going to want to install firfox (if you don't have it) and then add the 'ublock' extention to block popups and other nasty things. Then once you have that, you can check out the sites in our megathread, they are safe and trusted: https://rentry.co/megathread-movies-and-tv . Let me know if you need more help. :)

I too am out of the loop but why not use tor? The VPN companies can still trace it back to you if what you did turned out to be illegal.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 hours ago

Because streaming over tor is 1) painfully slow and 2) a dick move for the whole network that is very important to others.

VPN don't give a crap about people pirating, and governments probably don't as much as people think (I guess that depends heavily on your country), but if you really want to be safe, go for one of the logless vpn, like mullvad or ivpn.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

That's why I suggested trusted vpn companies. Proton keeps no logs, so they couldn't hand it over if even they wanted to. I also suggested VPN as opposed to TOR because TOR can be fiddly*, and complicated because of that to a non-techy person (which is what this person had said they were). The speeds of TOR are also not good for streaming.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

fidely

I don’t want to be that guy but I suspect you mean “fiddly,” whose spelling derives from “fiddle.”

I only mention it because it took me a bit to figure out what you were saying.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

Thx, fixed that now!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 hours ago

sub for a month with a prepaid gift card (so no potential issues cancelling). binge for a week, run out of stuff to watch, the rest of the sub goes unused and wasted. been down that road once every year or two here.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 hours ago

Yar-har, fiddle-dee-dee!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 hours ago

I didn't watch the sewage pipe much but I kept up my subscription for the next seasons of Corn and Asparagus, but when they raised the price I had to finally cancel.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I thought that was an Amazon bag sitting in the doorway due to the logo/handle similarity.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Mhh, multiple flavors of septic waste

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

How does one pronounce "Mhh"?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 hours ago

Like a long "M", but kinda "breathy" in the "h". If they pronounce it like me.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 hours ago (6 children)

I seem to be in a minority in thinking I get good value for money from Netflix.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Someone told me they're funding Sesame Street, is this not true?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 hours ago

Are you living in 2015? Nah, I'm kidding, if it gives you enough, then fine. I just canceled right after the pandemic.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 hours ago

I cancelled after I realized I watched 2, maybe 3 shows a year on it. Had it since the pre-streaming days.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

It isn't a bad value if you watch it regularly.

They do cycle in good movies, but they aren't always up front and noticeable. Every service has a massive amount of trash and crappy interfaces for discovering stuff.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 hours ago

My wife is in your boat. I've tried to convince her many times to cancel but she refuses.

Netflix isn't terrible. The Titan sub doc was good. Black Mirror, Love/Death/Robots. They have some good shows

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 hours ago

If you like their content. For me, it's like one in 50 items are worth watching, if that. Sorting through the duds costs time and ain't nobody got time fo dat as far as I am concerned.
