This week was mostly just Donkey Kong Bananza

Couldn't play as much as I wanted to, but have reached the 3rd world, and am about half-way through that too. I am going slowly by collect 100% stuff in each world, though mainly focusing on Bananas.

Still, most of the time is spent just moving around smashing through stuff.

For the times when my Switch 2 is hijacked by the little ones, I have started AI: The Somnium Files , it's a detective VN / adventure game. It was on my wishlist for a while, and with 3rd one releasing recently decided to finally give it a try.

Investigation works somewhat like in Phoenix Wright, you go to a place, and 'investigate' things / talk to people by clicking on them with the cursor. No moving around or anything. The tone is much darker, but there are some comical dialogues or descriptions. There are also some sequences where you have to move around and interact with some stuff, they are different from the normal investigation parts, but are still part of solving the mystery.

I am only on 3rd day or so, enjoying the game so far.

Certain things are alluding to certain truths already, but I wonder if it's a red herring or they are giving away stuff already.

Didn't play Marvel's Midnight Suns last week because of Bananza, but will be getting back to it on this weekend. Hope to clear Part 2 of the story soon.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

Also, I can't remember if I mentioned this previously, but I bought a secondhand 2DS a couple of months ago so I've finally got around to starting Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. The DS Layton games were some of my favourites but because I never owned a 2DS/3DS, or a portable device that could emulate them well, I have held off on playing them until now. Layton games are best played in a cosy space, like in bed or an armchair with a rug, with headphones on and the weather has been colder and wetter here recently which is perfect for this type of game!

Other than that, I haven't had too much free time for gaming lately, and to be honest I haven't really had the drive for it either. I am approaching my mid-30s now and sometimes wonder if I'm going to "grow out of" gaming as a main hobby at some point in the near future.

I've had that thought about "growing out of" gaming several times. Even when I was younger, there were times when I would just play my old consoled a few times a year and thought about getting rid of it all. But then something new comes out that catches my eye and I will get right back into it, or I just rediscover some game.

I turned 40 recently and I've been enjoying gaming as much as ever. Sometimes life just gets in the way or we lose interest in gaming for a while. And it's also completely fine if you just grow out of it. But you can always come back to it if it's something you enjoy. Anyway, enough rambling, back to my cave...

I guess part of the reason I think about it quite a bit these days is because almost all of my friends who are my age and older have mostly stopped. The guys who haven't are the ones who are still single, living by themselves with no responsibilities to anyone beyond their employer.

One guy I know has vlogged and blogged quite a lot about his experiences "quitting" video games. The realisation he came to was that gaming was holding him back in many other areas of his life, and that he had been reluctant to acknowledge this earlier in his life because he was scared about what that said about all the time he had sunk into video games instead of solving his problems. It's not that severe for me, but I do wonder whether it's a hobby I maintain out of laziness/fear of trying something new, rather than because I still love it.

Congratulations on getting 2DS! I had been thinking about getting a 3DS but eventually decided against it. Can't even manage current systems, don't need to add older ones too 😄

I have heard good things about Professor Layton games, looking forward to the next one, it was announced quite a while ago, hopefully we will be getting it soon. I think latest update said in year 2025. Let's see.

Don't worry about growing out of gaming. It's just a hobby, and there is nothing wrong with switching them up once in a while. That being said, I am nearing my 40s and haven't grown out of it yet. There was surely a lull for a few years, but that was more because of family and kids then due to age as a number. Though the amount of time I can give to games has surely decreased, and I am much more willing to drop games I am not liking then I used to before, which is more of an evolution then anything else.

I'll be interested to read your future updates about AI: The Somnium Files. I really like Kotaro Uchikoshi's work, he has written some of my favourite visual novels previously including Ever 17 and 999. I'll wait until you're further in before I talk about The Somnium Files (I don't want to spoil or influence anything for you).

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Oh, I didn't realise it's written by the same guy who wrote 999 and Zero Escape series. Those are already in my wishlist, if I knew I would've preferred to play those first. Ah well, too late for that now.

I post update weekly in this thread, so let's discuss it more when I have played it further.

My army of green leafed and flower crowned small dudes are taking siege of the underground caverns in search for celestial tourists lost on their interstellar voyage.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Which Pikmin are you playing? I need to start it too.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I’m playing 4 right now! The first three are all fun too though and worth playing if you get a chance. I got Pikmin 1 & 2 bundled together for the Switch, and it was a lot of fun playing through those ones again!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, plan to start with the first one.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I’ve actually been on my 3DS a lot this week, I replayed Hamtaro: Ham Hams Unite! and a short homebrewed game jam GBA called World of Zoink, which was cute.

I also picked up Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door for the Switch at good prices last weekend so once I’m past my current retro obsession I’m excited to start on those!

BANANA!

It's been 100% Donkey Kong Bananza for me this week. I just got to SL 800. I've been having lots of fun! Not even close to getting 100% on each layer, but I spend a lot of time exploring, breaking stuff and getting bananas. So much fun!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I am still on SL300, hope to clear it soon.

I very rarely go for 100% in games. Just try to do some collecting while completing quests. This is one of the rare cases where I am enjoying collecting everything.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I might go for 100% after I'm done with the main story. I'm sure now that I've been playing for longer, I would find way more stuff when going back to the initial layers. I've been having this happen a lot where I say "I'm just going to do one more thing" and then I do another, and another, and by the time I realize I've been playing for hours 😅

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the gameplay has that kind of loop.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Almost done with Star Ocean Second Story R, I'm literally right before the dungeon called 'Phynal'.

My initial love for the game didn't fully carry over into the second half. There's been a big change in scenery and ever since that, the writing got worse by quite abit. It's just one guy with little to no personality sending you from one fetch quest to the next. There are still good things in there, but it started off way better.

Next up, I think I'll go back to something turn based, which means either Octopath 2, SMTV:V or Baten Kaitos.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

lol at "Phynal".

That's a bid sad to hear. Have heard great things about it so had high expectations from it.

Hadn't you finished Baten Kaitos?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Could be just me and the game is definitely worth experiencing. I haven't checked yet if other people thought so too. However, personally speaking, I thought the second half of 'Star Ocean The Divine Force' was executed way better. It does have a similar structure and the same split between two different viewpoints, one native to the planet and one from a futuristic civilization.

Nope, I haven't played it yet. However, I did mention it several times as a potential next game - I just never commited to the 120h+ journey, assuming I play both back to back.

I need to play two more stages of Fire Emblem Engage to finish my flier only run. It's kind of a different game if map hazard are no concern for you or mountains, buildings and so on.

And i play Trails into Reverie. So far awesome

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Flier only run sounds fun, but doesn't this become tough when facing enemies which are strong against flying?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

there aren't that much bow units in the game. And if they run into you, you always find an opening to kill them first. There are a few parts in the game i use teleporting or the additional live stone of tiki to survive harder moments. It's possible, no even that hard. I play on hard, not maddening, so it's probably a lot harder on maddening (besides the maddening difficulty), especially on the fog of war maps.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Ahan, thanks for info.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I also haven't had much time to play Bananza this week. I'm just past the first split in the road, where you get to choose which world to go to... as if I'm not going to go back and do them both. I hope the game gets a bit more interesting in the enemy department. So far, you really just punch them all to oblivion, even most bosses. And with my Bananza gauge seemingly never being empty whenever I even think about using it, it's even easier. Sometimes I activate Bananza mode just to hear the music, it's a bit broken.

And a big shoutout to YouTube for recommending a piece of the game's soundtrack that spoiled something pretty big that I really would have liked to experience on my own terms.

Today I dove back into Monster Hunter Wilds for the Arch-tempered Uth Duna event quest. He's usually more predictable, but somebody taught him how to roll and it's messing everything up!

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the game is pretty easy, especially on the combat side. Agree about the Bananza gauge, but I like it this way. I am one of those people who end up never using their "ultimate" in case I get the need to use it "soon", don't have to worry about that here. In most cases it gets filled when I am still in Bananza mode, so can use it without worries.

Sorry about something getting spoiled. Fortunately, I have been lucky to avoid any kind of spoilers.

About MH, I don't recall if I asked you before, but have you played Wild Hearts? SwitchUp guys have been praising it a lot.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I haven't played it and I don't think I will, especially if it's good. I'm already into Monster Hunter, I can't lose this much time to another game!

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Heh. That's an interesting take. 😁

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

but there are some comical dialogues or descriptions

Date's silliness was one of my favorite parts of the game, I laughed really hard at some parts. And as you said it makes an interesting contrast to the darker storyline.

His banter/dynamic with Aiba is also great.

Playing Stella of the End!

Was not in a good mindset for story-focused games, so minimal progress this week, only completed one more chapter.

Playing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker!!

Completed Episodes 1 and 2, and I'm now halfway through Episode 3. Getting all Gems/Challenges/Pixel Toads before moving to a new stege.

I'm enjoying the game, but I really wish it respected your time better. There's no reason to hide the Challenge before you complete the stage once, nor to force to enter again to find the Pixel Toad - all of these should be available on the first run. Having to repeat stages for these also hurts the pacing of the game.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I really appreciate your descriptions on visual novels. Your posts have become like a to-do list for me (in a good way).

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the compliment!

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

The writing is pretty good in the AI: The Somnium Files. His relationship with not just Aiba but also other characters is interesting.

Having to repeat stages for these also hurts the pacing of the game.

I hate when games do that. Not a fan of replaying the same stage again and again. Now that I remember this, I am not in mood to go back to Captain Toad 😀

I’m back to Xenoblade Chronicles X, Chapter 13, Act 3. My desire to 100% stuff is working hard against my desire to get this game out of my Switch 2.

I’ve been playing more Golden Lap. I have the two best drivers now, so the races are less frantic and more anti-climactic. I’m looking forward to a restart, but also worried that restarting will kill my interest in the game.

I’ve been “playing” CivIdle now that it is out on MacOS. It helps scratch the itch of civilization since I can’t run Civ VII on my computer and won’t buy it for Switch 2.

And I have leveled up Cecil of FFIV fame to maximum in Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent. He’s so cool it almost makes we want to clear more story content (but I doubt I will).

With my school year starting up in August, I’m trying to avoid buying anything new, but I am aware that I have a lot of podcasts to catch up on and I’ve nearly completed Picross S8. So maybe next weekend I’ll be telling y’all about another picross purchase.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Good luck with XCX!

I just started CivIdle, it's pretty fun. Don't think I'll play it much though.

Picross FTW! I am still at S5, going to take me a long while before I finish it.
