I finally found time for this. Here are some changes:

  • Image, gif and video extensions will no longer be changed, they will remain as they are.
  • File quality will not be reduced, they will remain at max quality.
  • Added support for types such as APNG, JPEG-XL.
  • Animation types will not be converted to video.
  • The file size limit remains at 20mb. If I can somehow solve the donation issue, I would like to increase this limit in the future.

Thanks to @asonix for making the above and many more improvements.

Please let me know if you encounter any errors. I need to tweak the configurations a bit more I guess.

Is the maximum image resolution still at 4096 by 4096? Thanks for the change/update ๐Ÿ‘

It was more than that, I guess 16k or something. You can try.

Great, I got 6000x4000 and 8600x5700 (https://lemmynsfw.com/post/7185646) pics to post successfylly, so glad to see the old 4096 limit is no longer in effect.

And 13622x10246 px - https://lemmynsfw.com/post/7185894, https://lemmynsfw.com/post/7186106 - though it seems the posts' thumbnails don't show up consistently...

I fixed the thumbnail problem BTW

Also do you think 16k is enough? I can increase it if you need more. Only file size is matters to me.

16k is totally overly sufficient for me. I still like to resize/compress images down to less than 10k px and 4-8 Mbytes.

I don't know how many folks actually expand into the full image as opposed to just browsing smaller sized "cards" in browser or apps (in mobile environments)

Even on Reddit, bigger sizes never get any appreciation/love except from a very very tiny handful of users.

TBH I like to zoom in to some details but 2-4-8k is absolutely fine too ๐Ÿ˜…

Pict-rs has resizing features built-in but clients are not implementing it (properly). So I guess it is wise decision.

Yeah the image thumbnail process is timing out. Iโ€™ll increase the timeout when Iโ€™m available.

Lemmy-ui is adding โ€œformat=webpโ€ to the end of the image uris. Its a problem too.

Iโ€™ll propose fix for this. If they donโ€™t want to add it then I can do it on our fork I guess.

Does Lemmy not use thumbnails? I mean smaller size version of the actual image. I feel like everytime I try to look at new posts ("local" and "scaled" at lemmynsfw.com) it tries to load all full size images on the page. I assume I then get rate limited and lemmynsfw loads really slowly for a few minutes. This problem doesn't appear when looking at older posts that I have already viewed because the images are probably already cached.

This is definitely something that should be fixed.

This is a Lemmy problem and theyโ€™re improving it a lot. Iโ€™ll wait for the next update and then do something if itโ€™s insufficient for us ๐Ÿ‘
