Right. I'm not really turning down the volume, I'm adjusting my attention focus.
There was something I heard about why talking on the phone is more dangerous than talking with someone in the car. One of the reasons was that while someone is talking to you in the car they know when to stop talking when the situation causes for the drivers attention. While a phone conversation the person on the other end has no clue clue of the situation in the car.
Some passengers do, others... Well...
I've had accidents due to talking to one of my passengers. I've never had an accident from a phone convo in the car.
Yeah, merging into busy traffic is too much visual stimulus, closing my eyes helps

reducing stimulus in one arena allows for processing in others. turning down the audio can absolutely let you spend more energy on the visual field.
I'm sure they were joking but you're spot on.
Like, closing your eyes helps you focus on listening better (unless you're trying to read lips but anyway)
If you hit an icy patch on a winding road, I recommend not closing your eyes.
It's because you are focusing more with your eyes because you're looking for something so you turn the music down to use your ears to be more aware of your surroundings. I'm not sure why people have such a hard time figuring this out.

Yeah, like freeing up brain power for visual processing. The brain can only do so much at a time.
Sometimes you got to free up computing power.

A finger in the bum or a corkscrew in my pee hole makes me sneeze instantly.

You joke but yes, I absolutely do for focusing at work.
If I notice the music, my attention is pulled away. And switch/mute for a bit so I can laser focus on a specific result.
Maybe they should turn the screen off too, just in case.
