awright, I made the post.

I also watched Fear City last night, btw! It was pretty bad, but entertaining. I can't believe the same guy who directed this also did Bad Lieutenant. Or maybe I can, this one definitely had plenty of "strip club" scenes. Anyway, Fear City reminded me most of the Bronson movie 10 to Midnight, tho I think back then the whole "chasing a serial killer" trope was pretty common in movies (like Dirty Harry, etc.) whereas nowadays that's just something for a TV movie. I kind of liked the whole sub-theme about the ex-boxer, I suspect that was Ferrara's favorite part.

I dunno fam, ask the mods, kek. But seriously, there's been dark ambient posted here before.

Aw yeah, there are at least two wrestling scenes of note!

I got directed bo this movie @[email protected] in the comments of another post, and realized that more people had to see it.

It's a great example of how a good premise and decent actors can go horribly wrong. The wikipedia article has a lot of good info on how that happened. And there's a fan site dedicated to the many ways this movie goes wrong.

I suggest you watch this movie. It's free online and it has great set design. You'll quickly note that Harvey Keitel's voice sounds weird -- that's bc his voice was dubbed by a British actor who was trying to do an American accent. And about a quarter of the way through you'll realize the plot is out of control. The thing is, it's kind of like how when a machine starts breaking down, and you learn a lot about how machines work. In this case there's a lot to learn about pacing, characterization, handling themes, and (especially) suspense. When these things work perfectly you don't even notice them, but this movie is a great opportunity to see the exposed bone and torn muscle.

Ultimately, the movie is about the quality level of a bad Star Trek episode. And people do watch those bad Star Trek episodes. But y'all are b-movie enthusiasts, so I don't need to tell you that. There are plenty of opportunities for fun cringe and bemusement in this movie.

Same with industrial music! (especially if no lyrics)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I checked out some of that Night Nail, pretty good stuff!

The song's pretty good, and I really like the movie-quality performing outfit. But there's a bit of a mismatch between the "look" and the voice, I would have expected something a bit harsher like a death growl almost. Moriis' voice suggests... some kind of sage in a cowled robe looming over a tome or an orb or something... But maybe that's played out and he's doing something new here...

ok @[email protected] looks like we got you set up. You got @[email protected] and @[email protected] as co-mods, both of them have mod experience and have been around for a while so I think you all together will be able to handle it.

I've removed myself as mod, but I will advertise the "relaunch" on places like [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected] , let me know if I can help you out some other way, I'll be on the community obviously!

Hey @[email protected] in case you didn't notice, @[email protected] and @[email protected] also wanted to be mods of [email protected], they have a lot more experience so they'll be able to help out @[email protected] (who's only been here for a couple weeks). Can you please add them as well? Thanks.

Edit: OK, looks like we got it under control.

Just finished watching Saturn 3 and it definitely was a movie. Did you want to make a post about it for discussion?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hi, I'm on slrpnk.net and yesterday I made a weekly announcement post to [email protected] I think you can see that post here:

However later I noticed that if I looked at the community in private mode, my post wasn't there! I just now reposted it with a slightly different title and now if you look at the community it is there:

So I'm thinking... the first post didn't federate? Is that the issue? If so, why? Or is it just a bug and if so who do I report it to? Thanks for any feedback.

Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows on a computer side-by-side. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.

How to watch the movie:

an industrialist's orphaned grandchildren and their collie befriend an awakened Yeti.

...

While RKO and Universal Pictures battled over King Kong's rights, Dino De Laurentiis—the producer of the 1976 King Kong remake—announced another giant monster film which would be filmed in the Himalayas, entitled Yeti. Although his version ended up not being made, this film was a low-budget cash in on De Laurentiis' project, which aimed to beat it to theaters....

In a contemporary review, Maurizio Porro of the Corriere della sera was most negative, writing that "[t]he film was shot on such a low budget (the rudimentary effects are accomplished through obvious image superimpositions) that in comparison, the Taviani brothers look like Cecil B. DeMille. But it is not the only issue: [...] the story and screenplay are completely missing. Mystery and suspense are absent, whereas ridiculousness is in full effect, dominating the proceedings."

Reposting bc the original post didn't federate for some reason?!

The March 2025 top-tier sumo wrestling tournament is currently going on in Japan. Most of the sumo wrestlers are Japanese, but there are some foreigners and for the first time there are two Ukrainian guys there.

They had to fight their way "up the ranks" to get there, and had fought once before in a lower rank, but last night was their first meeting at the highest level.

If you want to see more sumo, follow the daily postings at [email protected] for videos with English commentary!

Someone linked to this on Mastodon... can't find it again tho... Don't know much about these folks but they're pretty cool.

The top sumo wrestlers in Japan compete every other month in tournaments that last two weeks. The March tournament just started a couple days ago, and for the rest of the tournament I plan to post daily links to recap videos. You're welcome to come join and discuss and/or ask questions.

Imagine two linebackers crashing against each other but they have no padding and they're allowed to do judo throws and there's a priest urging them on. That's basically sumo.

Americans tend to think of sumo as a funny thing, but in reality it's a quasi-religious endeavour. The wrestlers live communally in a highly stratified environment training daily, and the referees perform shinto-derived rituals before and after the day's matches. The wrestlers gain weight to make them harder to push, but underneath that weight they are all muscle.

Anyway check it out!

With technique explanations.

If you don't know much about sumo this is a great video to watch, it's a summary of all the top action and the commentator explains things in English.
