It's also amazing just how incredibly tacky the MAGA movement is.

The Nazis were evil, but at least they wore clothing designed by Hugo Boss. At least they borrowed from impressive looking Roman-style banners and eagles. They understood how to use colour, light and so-on to project strength. Even if you acknowledge that the Nazis were evil, at least you can sort of understand why the German people were drawn in.

But the MAGA movement is so weak, so tacky. Even if I were somehow 100% aligned with their beliefs, I wouldn't want to associate with them in public because their whole aesthetic is so embarrassing. I can't understand how anybody can look at Trump and see competence, intelligence and strength. I also can't understand how anybody can look at a typical MAGA rally and see anything other than a design scheme that would make even Wal*Mart cringe.

I'm going to press (X) for Doubt.

I've been watching F1 for decades, and I can't remember there ever being a chief mechanic who is female. In addition, there was a lot of press a year ago about the first female mechanic in F1. Not chief mechanic, just mechanic.

Also, for those who don't know, the mechanics in F1 are also the pit crew. The person who decides when it's safe for the car to leave the box after the tires are changed is typically the chief mechanic. They used to be known as "the lollipop man" because they carried a sign at the end of a long pole that they used to tell the driver when to leave the pit box. These days they use a digital stoplight sort of device, so they're not literally standing out in front of the car anymore, but they're still near the front holding a signalling box. The lollipop man / chief mechanic is a very visible position in F1, and a female chief mechanic would have definitely drawn a lot of attention.

This guy says that he knows nothing about cars. Could he have been referring to someone who was an important mechanic but not the chief mechanic? Sure. Could he have meant Formula 2 or some other racing formula instead of Formula 1? Sure. Could this just be a bullshit story made up for internet points? Yes. I really don't think there has been a female chief mechanic of an F1 team yet. But, if I'm wrong, I'm certainly interested in who it is/was.

You think suits from the 18th century look almost exactly the same as ours?

18th century suits

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The suit is a 20th century invention.

Someone might "know what it was", i.e. it's a jacket that doesn't close properly and matching pants. But, they didn't exist until the 20th century.

It's a matter of time before they finally go out of fashion, and people look at them like we look at men wearing tights and shirts with puffy sleeves.

Yeah, I want as little contact between the police and homeless people as possible.

Wow, you should really call up her family and tell them they're wrong. Those poor fools who knew her and were with her day after day think she committed suicide, but you, some guy on the internet, you know better. They have a right to know! Go call them up and inform them how wrong they are!

And suicidal people are always honest about not being suicidal, right?

If he resigns, Tesla becomes just another car company. Car companies get a P/E ratio of 7 (if they're well run). Tesla's P/E ratio is above 160. Elon Musk's "genius" leadership is how Tesla investors have convinced themselves that they're not investing in a typical car company. If he goes, the stock tanks. But, then again, if he stays, the stock tanks because he's clearly not a genius, and even if he was he's an evil genius and people don't want to buy cars associated with his brand.

Here come the conspiracy theorists.

Could it be that being in the spotlight is exhausting and depressing? Could being a victim of sex trafficking have a huge mental toll? Could it be that her relatives actually know her mental state better than some dude sitting on a couch halfway across the world.

No, of course not, it has to be murder because that makes everything more exciting.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

That's the problem. Someone shouldn't have to find a random YouTuber to get basic answers.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Of course it will be seen as silly. Most people are just too used to them to see them that way today.

It's like seeing judges wearing wigs and robes. At one point that was just normal formalwear, but it looks really goofy now.

Stocks have almost returned to where they were 5 days ago after his latest change to the tariffs.

I need some new earbuds, and live in a place with severe winters. I want to be able to access the controls using gloves or mittens if possible.

The online reviews I've seen all assume that you can just touch the earbuds with bare hands, but when it's well below freezing, that sometimes isn't possible. If I have to take off a mitt to use my earbuds my hand might not warm up until I can get back indoors again. Earbuds that work with touchscreen-capable gloves aren't good enough either. I've never seen touchscreen-capable gloves that keep your hands warm at -40C.

Any suggestions?

First time home buyers will not be charged GST (5%) when buying a home, as long as the place they're buying costs less than $1M. This means that people buying a home for the first time will save up to $50k on their purchase.

Edit: Note, GST is mostly only charged when buying newly built homes, so this won't have any effect for people buying used homes.

Currently the PM doesn't have a seat in the house. If he visited the house, he'd have to go to the visitor's gallery.

It's an interesting situation. The PM is the leader of the federal liberal party, but he's not a member of parliament. But, does he need to be? Is the PM sitting in the house of commons just a tradition that nobody has challenged yet? Could the PM delegate things inside the house of commons to their deputy-PM and then do things like give speeches, attend diplomatic functions, etc.?

The US has a very different system where the president isn't part of the legislative branch at all. But, typically presidents don't twiddle their thumbs waiting for something to do. Being the head of state keeps most presidents busy. It makes me wonder if technically Carney could choose not to run for office, and just spend his time doing head-of-state things rather than legislative things.

"Sports Interactive regret to inform that, following extensive internal discussion and careful consideration with SEGA, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Football Manager 25 and shift our focus to the next release."

This sounds like a disaster.

For those who don't know, Football Manager has a yearly release schedule, and the highlight of the release is that it has a database of nearly every professional player in the world, the club they play for, and an attempt to "scout" them, giving all their various attributes from passing ability, to height and weight, to their determination.

By releasing in March 2025, they're going to release the game essentially at the end of the 2024/2025 season right before players start moving to new clubs and the database becomes obsolete. Typically, around March is when they're giving deep discounts on the yearly release because they know there won't be much remaining interest in playing a game that's almost out of date.

They really shot themselves in the foot. They could have released a Football Manager 25 that was 100% FM 24 but with an updated database, they've done it before. They could have called "Football Manager 25" something like "Football Manager Next Gen" and not tied themselves to a certain season. And, if they do manage to get Football Manager 25 out in March, are they really going to be able to do FM 26 half a year later? Will anybody buy FM 25 if they know there's a FM 26 coming out so soon?

Maybe the "great" America that Donald wants to take us back to is the 1860s?

Note: National Bank of Canada is a commercial bank, not the Bank of Canada which is Canada's national bank. Um. Which is Canada's central bank.

The graphs in the presentation are the key takeaway for me. But, some key words:

"Canada is caught in a population trap that has historically been the preserve of emerging economies. We currently lack the infrastructure and capital stock in this country to adequately absorb current population growth and improve our standard of living."

...

"To put things in perspective, Canada's population growth in 2023 was 3.2%, five times higher than the OECD average."

...

"But to meet current demand and reduce shelter cost inflation, Canada would need to double its housing construction capacity to approximately 700,000 starts per year, an unattainable goal."

The article was clearly AI generated. Microsoft has killed the original article, giving a 404, pretending it never existed. But, you can see an archived image of it on Imgur.

Even ignoring the ridiculousness of including the Ottawa Food Bank as a destination. Even ignoring the callousness of the line "Consider going into it on an empty stomach", the article is just full of spicy autocomplete nonsense.
