One of the key characteristics of conservatives is being the person wearing the boot. When governments told people to wear masks, suddenly the law applied to them, which is why you saw such resistance from conservatives. It wasn't about health or even not being "sheeple" for them. It was, from their POV, the government oppressing them.
They have no problem will laws that apply to everyone else (e.g. abortion, welfare restrictions, etc.) because they don't see themselves as affected. But when laws begin to apply to them, suddenly it's oppression.
