I get that they have to protect their IP, but $14m is insane. Feels like the judge threw the book, switch, 3DS and every other console they could find at him. Does he have no right of appeal against the sentence?

When Bowser was first sentenced, Nintendo's lawyer Ajay Singh said in a court transcript (via Axios) that the company wanted to "send a message" to other Switch hackers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought sentencing was supposed to reflect the severity of the crime and make fair restitution? It sounds as if this sentence / restitution was massively inflated to create a deterrant, to benefit a private business. Huge fail from Nintendo imo that only makes me want to never buy one of their games or consoles again.

I lost a friend to ket. He was partying with bad people, he was sick, choked on his vomit and they stole his stuff / left him to die.

Ketamine is a very interesting ride, and has wonderful potential as an antidepressant, but for the love of yourself (and my badly missed friend, John the magic man), PLEASE have someone compus mentus watching over you while you experience it, if you choose to do so.

Also strongly recommend you DO NOT mix with alcohol.

I've had this before, except I was drunk, and it was a kebab.

I really, really do not like kebabs... my friend convinced me to get one. This kebab was like it had been sent from the heavens, I was in shock, never had I experienced a kebab like this.

The next day, I messaged my friend asking where we had the kebab... neither of us could remember. I had a vague idea of what the door looked like, we searched every time we were in the city centre for many years, but in vain.

This was hilarious to read. There's nothing funnier than someone behaving unreasonably getting madder and madder, while the person they're dealing with stays perfectly calm. Though I don't doubt it'll result in even pettier behaviour from the republicans.

Hey all.

Finally in my 40s I'm fortunate enough (with a lot of family help & a mortgage) to be buying a home. It's end-of-terrace; just spoke to the surveyor today after he's done most of the inspection and he's found a lot of structural problems.

Feeling a bit defeated, it's taken so long to get to this stage of having an offer accepted, and being close to exchanging contracts. It's an old house so while I wasn't expecting it to be fault-free, I'm quite disappointed and I guess looking for some advice / reassurance.

Not got the report in text yet but he mentioned potential subsidence; rising damp; cracked walls; problem with the chimney stack; window frames; and others. Said it's all stuff that can be fixed, but potentially expensive. My plan is to wait for the text report next week, then contact the estate agent and attempt to negotiate a price reduction in line with the cost of the repairs, which imo will run into at least £15k. Considering it's on the market for £85k, and the owner wouldn't even put the electric on for viewing because she didn't want to pay £1 a day standing charge, I'm anticipating some pushback.

But, should I even bother? Is this 'sunk cost fallacy' at play? I certainly feel like if they're not prepared to negotiate re repairs then I have to walk away as I could buy a well-maintained property round here for the total cost of around £100k!

Any advice much appreciated.

You can't exploit it. I know some people won't like to hear this, but Chinese expats are a security risk if they have any family still in China. It's well known at this point that the Chinese gov threatens family members to pressure and blackmail residents abroad to perform espionage.

Hello! I’m AR15U! I’m the owner of rqd2.net! I’m transgender and transrace, and questioning transage and transabled. I’m a MAP as well

What in the unmitigated fuck is this? How can someone be so ridiculous... transrace? Transage?! Transabled?!! Is this some sort of weird roleplay to make trans people look silly?

“Quite frankly, we've just been thanking God. You know, God’s been so good to us, and he protected us,

Never fails to amaze me how someone can completely disregard the hard work and sacrifice of other human beings and instead praise an imaginary skyguy.

Making this post because for some reason this show has flown completely under the radar for many. I had no idea it existed until it was mentioned on a comedian podcast I listen to (Bud Pod).

Of course, the BBC have kindly deleted it from their catalogue. Not sure of the rules here re pirated content so won't post any links, but I found it on both Internet Archive and torrent (torrent is much better quality). It also features a young Benedict Wong, his character is so different from how we know him today!

Well worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of Sean Lock.

Hi all. I'm interested to know how many of us have a serious sleep issue. So far I haven't found much of a unifying thread between aphantasics, other than that we're very familiar with what the back of our eyelids look like! But one common thing I have heard over the years is a sleep issue.

I have chronic insomnia. Interested to hear back from others.

Went to a cousin's wedding, her parents split when she was little so I'd not seen my Uncle Mal for decades. Tbh everyone was expecting him not to show because he's a selfish twat and knows nobody likes him.

Surprise, Mal is here. He had an inexplicably-attractive, younger date (Mal was a disgusting, horrid-breathed, lumpy old man and his date was a pretty, well-spoken woman in her 30s so we all assumed she was an escort, as Mal has no redeeming qualities).

The whole time everyone is desperately avoiding being stuck alone with him, and everyone is talking about having the same conversation... Mal has written a book, he's a writer now, and he's written a poem he wants to read.

He was given many hints, subtle and not-so-subtle that his poem wasn't wanted and he agreed not to read it. Unfortunately whether due to ego or wine, he loudly interrupted someone elses toast to announce he had a poem to read. Our collective hearts sank.

It was worse than we expected, at one point including cringe-inducing references to his daughter having large breasts. It went on and on for at least 5 minutes of everyone silently looking at the floor, sneaking the occasional "No way he just said that?!" glances at each other. He eventually finished, and just stood there awkwardly for about 10 secs, I assume waiting for applause, which obviously was not forthcoming.

Read the fucking room Mal, no-one wants to hear your shitty poem and no-one cares that you're (allegedly) a published writer now. And your breath smells like a fart pushed through an onion.

10 years ago, I'd have put my ability to visualise at 0 out of 10. Practice and occasional halucinogen use has got me to 2 out of 10. It causes no end of problems in day to day life, so I'm interested to hear if anyone has tips or just experiences to share so it doesn't feel such a lonely frustrating issue.

edit informative comment from @[email protected] about image streaming, I did a bit of digging on the broken links, the Dr isn't giving the info away for free anymore without buying their (expensive) book, but I found some further info on additional techniques here, pages 2/3: https://nlpcourses.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Image-Streaming-Mode-of-Thinking.pdf

Same thing is happening to me right now (UK). LL inherited a portfolio of mortgage-free properties a few years back, immediately jacked the rent up on them all. I tried to haggle what imo was an egregious rent increase (notified middle of the year after asking for a minor repair), we agreed on a price then he served me notice to quit; via the letting agent, not a peep or thanks from the LL after I've put ~£90000 into his familys' accounts over 13 yrs.

Of course, I can pay someone elses mortgage, but when I apply to a bank for one myself, I can't afford it.

A rare moment where I regret having disabled all the NVIDIA stuff that lets me screen record. Space storms! Wtf? Since when do we get storms in space?

The planet it was happening around was type 'shrouded in ash'. Was this a glitch, or a feature? As soon as I got to the system, I thought I was in a space battle at first with all the booms and flashes. There was a weird sort of smoke around the planet, blue lightning sparking all around it.

Some great answers, but none of them ELI5, so I'll have a go.

When electricity passes through a non-metal, it's like trying to push a person through a wall, the person just bounces off. When electricity passes through a metal, it's like you put lots and lots of doors in the wall, so the people (electricity) can pass through it easily. Different metals have different conductivity (more or less doors).

Superconductivity is like taking the wall away completely, 100% of the people can freely pass the threshold. But, so far, we've only been able to make superconductors that work at very, very, very low temperatures; or very, very, very high pressures. Of course, it's not viable for our computer or electric cables to be cooled that much, or pressured that much.

In our modern world, with so many devices running on electricity, we lose lots and lots of energy & money to resistance (those pesky walls with not enough doors). If we had a superconductive material that works at room temperature, and normal pressure, it would mean we can send electricity around the world with very small amounts lost to resistance; it would mean our devices would become incredibly efficient; and likely lead to the development of incredible new technology.

I'm sure it must be frustrating to have to deal with these attacks, but in a sense they're a signifier of how popular / successful this instance is.

Thanks for all the work you do on it, Ruud.

EDIT in the end, I settled on an Audient iD24, managed to get one from Juno for around £250

As per title... and to clarify, I don't just mean a headphone port, I mean an internal bus separate from the main outs, that can be seleCubase. This info doesn't seem to be present on the manufacturer's blurb; I've just been stung buying a Presonus 24c which it turns out only has 'Main Out L / R'.

Presonus support solution is to use their DAW, I am already fluent in Cubase / Ableton and have no desire to learn a third (StudioOne)! My main interface at home is a UAD Apollo which has main outs, virtual busses, and a headphone bus. I wanted to get a different interface for live stuff & travelling.

Obviously UAD is a higher tier than the £150 24c so perhaps I was expecting too much from it. I need an interface with headphone bus as I use that to run Slate VSX (headphone software).

Heya all. As per title, I'm looking for a good dark theme for qbittorrent. So far I've tried three (MumbleDark, Dracula, DarkStyleSheet), and they all have black text on dark grey background for unselected torrents.

This, imo, is about as clever as going 4000m underwater in a rinkydink submersible that's barely rated for 2000m. Surely someone wouldn't go to the trouble of creating a dark mode, with black text on dark grey. Wondering if it's something to do with my windows 10 setup, or just how it's designed... can anyone direct me to one that doesn't have this 'feature' or solve why this happens? Help much appreciated!

"Animal cells share some qualities with plant cells, but one key feature ours lack is a rigid cell wall. While this provides structure for plants, it’s also something scientists are increasingly looking at for use in new materials, cellulose technology and, now, insulin delivery."
