According to our source, those purchasing the Google Pixel 9a will get Fitbit Premium for 6 months, YouTube Premium for 3 months and Google One 100GB for 3 months. This is similar to the freebies that Google offered for the rest of the Pixel 9 series.

I feel like this isn't all that interesting news though because I thought trials were commonly included with new Android phones.

Can I get the phone for less if I don't want any of that crap?

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 7 points 1 month ago

Sadly I'm sure there's no such thing much like getting a license fee back if I don't want Windows preinstalled.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Keep all your free trial. I'mma uninstall stock android anyway.

[–] lordnikon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah but now they can increase the price with minimum risk and could even benefit to those that get lock their data into those services.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem, but if someone doesn't want to be locked into their increasingly expensive services, then they shouldn't be using those services in the first place. I feel like I missed your point, though...

[–] lordnikon@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Think of it this way the avg person wants to get value out of what they bought and they don't think ahead. so they use the free trial rebranded as included with the price. Then before too long all their stuff in in there and they are too lazy or too tired to move off. It's the cocaine selling model but instead of addiction it relies on apathy. And if you are the one of the people that does think ahead then you're not going to use the service and so therefore they got to increase the price of their product without you putting a strain on those free services it's a win-win for them.

Misleading headlines, should have been pixel 9a comes with YouTube Premium Trial.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 17 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I agree, but Rule 6 does not allow me to editorialize a headline.

[–] cmgvd3lw@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago

Not your fault man, not your fault.

[–] Positronic@lemdro.id 3 points 1 month ago

From whatI know of the mod team, you can summarize the article but you can't add your own opinion about something. It's to prevent user bias from creeping into titles because most people don't read the articles.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cool, so don't post a bullshit non-news article then? There is nothing of substance here? Nobody needed this "news", what are you doing, dude?

Contributing. It might still be interesting to some. It’s a slow community. Android news isn’t what it used to be. Why don’t you step up and contribute to show me how it’s done?

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Contributing is noble, appreciate your effort as we have to build. But you scroll past articles constantly in your daily life, you have a line below which you don't post, you should raise your line. No value in this post. At best it's boring and isn't additive - and I do contribute actively.

[–] Sequence5666@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

This isn’t a freebie. Its the same β€œtry this amazing thingie and now try it with shit tons of ads in three months”

The fact that google can have a monopoly of their own services pre installed is cause of concern for the future.

[–] Microplasticbrain@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lol three months, fucking worthless, make it for the life of the phone and we can talk. If I got a 9a I would probably never activate this for fear of being charged after the trial ends.

[–] n2burns@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As someone who uses YouTube Premium, this title piqued my interest. While lifetime would be nice, I figured it would be at least 1-2 years, which could make this phone pretty good value for me. At 3 months, I agree, I'm not sure if it's even work activating.

As someone who is intimately familiar with Google's shenanigans, this is not worth activating. These are insulting of them.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago

Only for 3 months huh? Guess their learned their lesson from offering free unlimited Google Photos forever from the Pixel 1 lol

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is a misleading headline. Fuck your technicality. Free trial... TRIAL.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 1 points 1 month ago

How much did sundar the creep paid for this advert?

[–] JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

I guess when your phones suck you need to try to compete on services.

In any case, the headline should say "Free trials" (not OP's fault.) Useless.

[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Free YouTube Premium

so, Firefox pre-installed then?

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

I don't get it

I use NewPipe so I don't know what features premium has

[–] blackberry@midwest.social 8 points 1 month ago

does it run Graphene or Calyx yet? otherwise, kinda don't give a shit about yt premium plus or whatever

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

They include every service in the world, but if there is no headphone jack they can get fucked.

Till it doesn't.

Never trust google to maintain a service. Pixel VPN and the Pixel 2 year upgrade program say hi.

[–] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 5 points 1 month ago

And let me guess, in order to get the "free" service you are forced to link a valid credit card and it will automatically renew without warning

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

How much more do I have to pay to not get those?

And the Fitbit bullshit is a scam. They started charging me without a word after 3 months, took me a couple months to notice I was paying for a service I used for a week and uninstalled. Google told me to go fuck myself when I tried to get a refund.

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Is this actually new for the "a" series?
