It’s kind of worse when you see it on the map, because it appears to be running parallel to an existing developed area, like they built a bypass through the rainforest for the climate summit, not a road for someplace previously unconnected.

I swear those climate summits only exist so the super wealthy and powerful can rub our helplessness under our noses. There‘s no other explanation for this series of increasingly disgusting and perverted events. It‘s not just tone deafness, it‘s a display of power. They‘re fucking the planet simply because they can.

The Dutch historian and writer Rutger Bregman once addressed this in Davos.

'There are 1500 private jets here to hear David Attenborough talk about how we're wrecking the climate... It's like a firefighters conference were no one is allowed to mention water.'

It's a brilliant piece and it's directly adding the fact that the ultra rich just don't pay their taxes. It went viral, yet should be mandatory viewing for every citizen of the world.

Bregman has since not been invited back to Davos...

Ordinary Things also covered Davos.

Fun fact, when it premiered, it got removed by youtube about 5 minutes after it went up the first time. Looks like it was a weird glitch, because it stayed up the second time with no real editing being done.

They pat themselves on the back while lying to the people about their achievements. Disgusting.

It's the balcony bailout party overlooking the occupy Wallstreet tents, just slightly better at hiding the contempt.

when they had the ASEAN in sf 23, they removed all the homeless people in the area for the week, its exactly like that. i saw a video recently how most countries practically gave up on said climate initiatives

Really hard to tell what's real and what's fake. What a timeline.

I've been reading "The Power Broker" about Bob Moses, who built an insane amount of expressways in New York. This reminds me of multiple instances in the book where he planned the route in a way that didn't seem to make sense until you learned that a powerful or wealthy person stood to gain from doing it that way.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Robert Moses is such a fascinating character.

Have you listened along with the 99pi Breakdown of the Power Broker? They just finished, and they had lots of guests including Robert Caro!, Pete Butigeg, and AOC.

Haven't listened to that podcast in ages. Thanks for the heads-up, listening while I slave for the man.

You betcha!

until you learned that a powerful or wealthy person stood to gain from doing it that way.

He was also an incredibly petty and racist person. No one stood to gain from the only city park to have an animal motif being the one in Harlem having an monkey motif.

I always wondered why they can't just do a fucking Zoom meeting....

If I hadn't improved my mental health over the last few years I really think I would've offed myself already. It's so fucking depressing it's not even funny anymore.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

Also, did they really need four lanes!?

[–] surph_ninja@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

We need to fucking end the conference industry. And I’m including big sports events like the Super Bowl, the Olympics, World Cup, etc. No more moving around and building new infrastructure constantly for it to be abandoned afterwards.

Just set the Olympics in Athens, Greece every four years, and stop with this massive waste. COP should be online only, considering its supposed goal.

It's getting harder to believe that climate change is threat and not a grift when climate activist act this way.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What?

You think the people who run and host COP are climate activists...??

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I know right? If there were ever a greater hive of scum and villainy, it could only be DAVOS.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

All those moral billionaires really care about the environment, I swear! They're activists!

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you really going to sit here and deny global warming when you can literally see it with your own eyes these past 20 years?

These guys are rich, causing it, and pretending to care

[–] jimbolauski@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Are you really going to sit here and deny global warming when you can literally see it with your own eyes these past 20 years?

Everyone says 2024 was one of the hottest, I didn't notice, spring didn't have many hot days and either did summer that I recall. I coach track in the spring and summer and take note of hot days. I don't remember the 23/24 winter and certainly don't remember the weather from the last 20 years. I have to "trust the science" for that kind of climate analysis. So no I have not seen it with my own eyes and unless you have been logging your own weather station for the last 20 years you have not either.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

You don't remember?? You don't fucking remember? I've seen winters go from snowy to snowless.

You not remembering it as a reason to not believe in it that's crazy. You have seen it. You are just forgetful

Normal people can remember last year's weather.

[–] jimbolauski@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

You don’t remember?? You don’t fucking remember?

Why would I remember a typical winter. It got cold & snowed, how much it snowed or how cold it was I have no clue.

I’ve seen winters go from snowy to snowless.

Either you live in an area that historically doesn't get much snow or you're full of shit, I'm betting the latter. According to "the science", no area has seen that drastic of a temperature change to go from snowy to no snow.

You not remembering it as a reason to not believe in it that’s crazy. You have seen it.

Never claimed I don't believe just that I have not observed changes with my own eyes.

Normal people can remember last year’s weather.

I doubt you remember how many times it got below freezing this past winter.

[–] sleeperdouge@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Tell that to the millions of people that suffered for scorching temperatures last year. Even just last week classes were suspended for some parts in our country due to a high heat index (humidity played a large factor but temperatures really are reaching dangerous levels for the past years) and it's not even summer here right now.

[–] jimbolauski@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

What does what other people experienced have to do with me seeing changes in weather?

My point, which went so far over your head that you'd need a telescope to see it, was that I have to trust the experts. When those experts clear the rainforest to make a road from the city to their lair it erodes that trust.
