When will these people understand that there is a class war. It's well underway. It's been underway for hundreds of years. We're just the only side that's been taking casualties. The veneer of civilization is so very thin at this point. It's just a whisper at this point. That's the only thing protecting them. They view people like these Democratic socialists as the threat. But no, this guy is one of their last hopes. He's one of the last things saying maybe we can patch it and keep civilization going. Because without people like him we're going to start dragging you from your houses, hanging you in trees and gutting you. So pick your poison.

That's part of the beauty of his plan: the taxes aren't predicated on them LIVING in NYC, but rather on them DOING BUSINESS there.
That way, not only can't they escape their responsibilities by relocating (a favorite pastime of billionaires), but all OTHER billionaires who want to do business in one of the financial nexuses of the world (which is very nearly all of them worldwide) have to pay closer to their fair share too!

There's no need to threaten like that, the billionaire bracket can absorb 2%, and they know it. It's a bluff and FUD is the only play they have. Some will move loudly for a political statement and the media they own will play up those stories, but reality few will give up NYC lifestyle and convenience over the proposed rate.
Edit- side thought... It would be so easy for one or two to step up and announce they are proud to support their city, to care for their neighbors, and embrace the proposal as a badge of pride and accomplishment. But no, this is america land of the greed

They established them nationally under W. No reason not to reflect that locally.
They sometimes do make good on their threats and the wealth concentrated in the northeast is absurd enough to make a significant difference at times

They all fellate him for being such a savvy businessman and skipping out on his civic duty is an extension of that. And this is the issue that was worth having a meltdown over. Not any of the kidnapping, not Trump's tariffs and market manipulation, not Adams' corruption or Cuomo's COVID scandals. Their utter silence on everything else makes their current freak out transparently hollow. None of them are worried about NYC, they're worried about the idea of the uberwealthy getting taxed to make life better for everyone else catching on.

This is so billionaires saying that they don't want to pay their fair share. They don't want other residents to pay their fair share either because they could be paying that share to the billionaires instead but if they have to pay that share to the government, who is going to keep these poor billionaires fed?
