It was a "gift" because he demanded it and the FIFA head allowed it after the fact.
The players did not consent and was not aware he was going to steal it.
This is retconning/gaslighting the situation, something he's known the world over for doing.

Please read the article first, it explicitly says he was handed the medal by infantino who allowed him to keep it. People making false claims on social media doesn't mean articles talking about it are false.
Was the intent to let him have it, or did trump simply take it and then Infantino decided to let the issue go? One version is fine, the other is someone writing off trump being a thief to not make a big deal of it.
The fact that we have to question which version it is says far more about Trump than whether or not he actually did simply confiscate it.

If you have credible evidence saying it was only gifted retroactively, please link it. The video evidence does not appear support that interpretation of events.
Why wouldn't they announce it ahead of time, or during the ceremony?

I have linked a video showing what actually happened, linked a verified signatory of the International Fact Checking Network and member of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network saying that it was given to him and that the submitted headline is misleading, and your response is "don't be naive".

Do you not understand how PR works? If they gave it to him, the President of the United States, who was literally there in person, do you really think he would have just slyly pocketed it? Or do you think they would have said, "we are giving this to you"?
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is a good example of how certain people come to believe in conspiracy theories.
They are faced with a seemingly overwhelming argument that destroys some fictional narrative they chose in their head, probably because they misremember or misunderstood some basic fact behind that narrative in the past (like not listening to a thing during math and sciences classes).
Re-evaluation of all the facts in light of new information would be too taxing, and probably lead to an undesirable outcome even if completed successfully (like realising they were wrong, and possibly start questioning themselves), so a different strategy is employed.
This consists of cherry picking a very minute aspect of a bigger picture (here, that trump puts the medal in his pocket) and spin a whole narrative around it.
This works surprisingly well, at least for them, since their brain has either forgotten the conflicting facts, or outright fails to recognise their glaring ignorance about all other possibilities to explain that minute aspect differently (like the fact that the guy handing over the medal to trump is talking to him, in what looks very much like the act of gifting him the medal).
Where this unfortunately breaks down is when other people, not so reality-impared, challenge them by pointing out the glaring factual omissions.
This is usually seen as a personal attack, like they're being called out individually and being called unpleasant things (which can be usually the case), and will respond by questioning the other person's character, intelligence and/or intentions.

This doesn't contradict the article. It explicitly says he was given the medal by Infantino in the subheader and the article body.

Infantino is president of FIFA. FIFA is legendarily corrupt. Infantino defrauded FIFA and used money to buy himself shit. Infantino enjoys the corruption and attention from being at the top. That's just how FIFA rolls.
At worst Trump stole the medal and trophy from a guy who doesn't give a shit. Infantino changed the rules to put his name on the trophy, that's all he cares about. He's cut from the same cloth as Trump.
At least Trump didn't take anything from people who matter. The players weren't screwed by Trump. FIFA screws the players and Trump stole bullshit from FIFA. Fuck them both for making the sport about themselves.
